IPCA-15 in September had change of 0.49% and IPCA-E of third quarter was 2.23%

The Extended Consumer Price Index-15 (IPCA-15) changed 0.49% in September, below August's result (0.79%).  From January to September, the cumulative index has changed 5.63% and, in the last 12 months, it had a change of 7.00%. Prices for these calculations were collected from August 13th to September 13th and compared with prices in force from July 14th to August 12th.

Rates decreased, mainly, because electric energy fees and urban bus fees did not register any raise. In addition, the growth rate of the landline telephone bills and of food products decreased. With 3.58% and 1.22%, respectively, electric energy fees and the urban bus fees exerted a relatively strong pressure on the results of August. Although landline telephone fees on September first increased, their result was the lowest; from the 3.55% recorded in August, they fell to 1.51%.

Food products (from 0.58% to 0.42%) registered decrease in many products. Prices dropped for carioca beans (-9.14%), rice (-4.71%), soybean oil (-2.85%), tomatoes (-2.71%) and others. French bread (from 1.07% to 0.28%) grew less than in the previous month, as well as powdered milk (from 2.13% to 0.97%) and canned goods (from 2.44% to 0.69%).

On the other hand, with the ongoing sugarcane upward trend, the change in alcohol fuel increased and went from 6.39% in August to 8.00% in September. Gasoline has also grown, going from 0.28% to 1.16%. Sugarcane has also interfered in the prices of refined sugar, which became 14.21% more expensive, after an increase of 9.38% in the previous month. Crystallized sugar, which had had an increase of 3.45%, increased another 5.69% in September.

Among the items with increasing rates month-on-month, the highlights are new cars (from 0.27% to 0.73%), used cars (from 0.38% to 1.70%), water and sewage fees (from 0.00% to 1.21%), car accessories and pieces (from 0.40% to 3.70%).

Among the areas, the biggest result was in Curitiba (1.08%) mainly because of the upward trend seen in new cars (2.05%), gasoline (4.84%) and alcohol fuel (15.12%). The lowest index was in Salvador (0.17%), whose highlight was the decrease of 0.54% in food prices.

The IPCA-E of the third quarter, which is composed by the cumulative IPCA-15, stayed at 2.23%. The result comprises July (0.93%), August (0.79%) and September (0.49%).

IPCA-15 refers to families with incomes from 1 to 40 minimum wages, whatever the source, and covers the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador e Curitiba, besides of Brasília and Goiânia. IPCA-15 is measured using the same methodology as the one used for IPCA, which has its prices collected throughout the month. The difference between the two indicators is in the period of price survey. The following chart contains the results of the indexes by areas.
