In the seasonally-adjusted series, the increase in the pace of the national industrial output between October and November 2016 (0.2%) was followed by only five out of the 14 places surveyed. The most intense advances took place in Pará (6.6%), Minas Gerais (5.9%) and Amazonas (4.4%), which registered negative rates in the previous month: -5.2%, -7.9% and -2.3%, respectively. Paraná (2.4%) and São Paulo (1.6%) also rose above the industry average, whereas Santa Catarina (0.0%) repeated the same level recorded last month.

The Northeast Region (-5.2%) and Pernambuco (-4.9%) posted the most intense negative figures in November, the former accelerating the drop of 1.2% reported in the previous month and the latter offsetting the cumulative expansion of 1.7% between September and October. The other negative rates took place in Bahia (-2.1%), Ceará (-1.9%), Goiás (-1.6%), Rio de Janeiro (-1.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (-0.8%) and Espírito Santo (-0.5%).

* Seasonally-adjusted series

Still concerning the seasonally-adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the overall industry pointed to a decline of 0.1% in the quarter ending in November 2016 over the previous month, and maintained the downward trend started in July 2016. In regional terms, still in relation to the marginal movement of this index, eight places posted negative rates, highlighted by the steepest declines reported in Goiás (-2.8%), the Northeast Region (-1.9%), Bahia (-1.4%), Ceará (-1.3%) and Pernambuco (-1.1%). Espírito Santo (2.6%) and Paraná (1.8%) registered the major expansions in November 2016.

In relation to November 2015, industry declines in 9 of 15 places surveyed

In the comparison with the same month in the previous year, the industrial sector reduced 1.1% in November 2016, showing negative figures in nine out of the 15 places surveyed. Having dropped 16.6%, Goiás recorded the most intense retreat, pressed, at a great extent, by the decreasing production of the sectors of food products – VHP and crystallized sugar, powdered milk, frozen, fresh and cooled beef, refined and crude soybean oil, tomato purée and condensed milk – and of coke, petroleum products and biofuels – ethyl alcohol. Pernambuco (-6.4%), Bahia (-5.4%), Espírito Santo (-4.5%), Ceará (-4.4%), the Northeast Region (-3.3%), Santa Catarina (-1.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-1.7%) also posted steeper negative figures than the national average (-1.1%). Minas Gerais (-0.3%) was the other place that reported negative rates this month.

Pará (9.8%) registered the highest advance in November 2016, mainly leveraged by the positive behavior coming from mining and quarrying industries (crude iron ores). The other positive figures were recorded in Paraná (6.2%), Rio de Janeiro (4.8%), Amazonas (4.3%), São Paulo (1.3%) and Mato Grosso (0.3%).

In the cumulative index in the year, industry retreats in 14 of 15 places

In the cumulative indicator between January and November 2016, against the same period in 2015, the reduction in the national output reached 14 out of the 15 places surveyed, four of them declining more than the national average (-7.1%): Espírito Santo (-20.3%), Amazonas (-11.7%), Pernambuco (-10.8%) and Goiás (-8.8%). Minas Gerais (-6.8%), São Paulo (-5.6%), Paraná (-5.1%), Ceará (-4.8%), Bahia (-4.7%), Rio de Janeiro (-4.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (-4.4%), Santa Catarina (-4.0%), the Northeast Region (-3.4%) and Mato Grosso (-1.1%) were the other places that posted negative figures at the end of the eleventh month of the year.

In these places, the lower dynamism was particularly influenced by factors related to the reduced manufacturing of capital goods – especially those for transportation equipment, trucks and vehicles for transportation of goods and for industrial use – intermediate goods – car pieces, non-metallic mineral products, textiles, steel products, fabricated metal products, petroleum products and mining and quarrying industries – durable consumer goods – cars, white and brown goods, motorcycles and furniture – and semi and non-durable consumer goods – footwear, textiles, wearing apparel and beverages. On the other hand, Pará (9.3%) posted the only advance in the cumulative index in the year, leveraged, at a great extent, by the positive behavior of the activity of mining and quarrying industries (crude iron ores).

In the cumulative index in 12 months, industry declines in 14 of 15 places

Having retreated 7.5% in November 2016, the annualized rate of the overall industry – cumulative indicator in the last 12 months – reduced the pace of decline against that recorded in June (-9.7%), July (-9.5%), August (-9.3%), September (-8.7%) and October (-8.4%). In regional terms, 14 out of the 15 places surveyed recorded negative rates in November 2016, yet 12 of them showed higher dynamism against the index of last October. The major gains between October and November were registered in Amazonas (from -15.3% to -13.3%), Paraná (from -7.6% to -5.9%), Rio de Janeiro (from -6.4% to -5.0%), São Paulo (from -7.3% to -6.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (from -5.9% to -4.9%), Espírito Santo (from -21.1% to -20.1%) and Minas Gerais (from -7.9% to -7.0%), whereas Goiás (from -7.6% to -8.3%) reported the highest loss between these two periods.
