The IBGE releases today, June 30, 2017, the update of the territorial areas of the Brazilian states and municipalities. The area of Brazil was updated to 8,515,759.09 km². The changes that took place in 2016 in the areas of every municipality involved in the Population Estimates can be accessed here.

The estimates for the resident population produced by the IBGE in the 5,570 municipalities take into account the updated Brazilian Political-Administrative Division - DPA.

According to the political-administrative structure in force on July 1, 2016, reference date for the 2016 Population Estimates, the reprocessing of the territorial areas took into account the changes in the municipal borders that took place after the 2010 Population Census and practiced in the annual Population Estimates between 2011 and 2016, as well as the other territorial adjustments during this period.

Resizing areas pertains to the evolution of the measurement technology and the dynamics of the Brazilian territorial division, which entails the periodic update of the state and municipal areas and reflects eventual changes in the political-administrative limits. Such changes may be of legal or judicial nature, or due to cartographic adjustments and improvements, as well as to the continuous use of the best production inputs and techniques. They may also take place due to changes reported to the IBGE up to April 30, 2016 in the scope of covenants in place with state bodies in charge of the political-administrative division and/or by the Legislative Assemblies.
