The IBGE puts out today (12/16/2015) the updating of the territorial areas of the Brazilian states and municipalities. For the surface of Brazil, the figure 8,515,767.049 km² was kept, published in the Brazilian Official Gazette (DOU) no 16 of 01/23/1013. The changes of areas occurred in 2014 in all municipalities surveyed by the Population Estimates can be accessed here.

The resident population estimates produced by the IBGE for the 5,570 municipalities take into account the updates of the Brazilian Political-Administrative Division (DPA). The recalculation of the values of the territorial areas, according to the political-administrative structure in force on 07/01/2014, reference date of the 2014 Population Estimates, includes the municipal border changes taking place after the 2010 Population Census and applied in the Population Estimates of 2011, 2012, 2103 and 2014, as well as the other territorial adjustments occurred in this period.

The redimensioning is intrinsic to measurement technology evolution and to the dynamics of the Brazilian territorial division, which implies the constant updating of state and municipal areas and reflects eventual changes in the political-administrative borders. Such changes can be legal, judicial or result from cartographic adjustments and refinements and from the continued use of the best techniques and production inputs. They can also be attributable to changes reported to the IBGE, in the scope of the covenants with state-run bodies in charge of the political-administrative division and/or Legislative Assemblies, up to the 30th of April, 2014.
