From 2010 to 2013, participation of capitals in the country's GDP decreased from 34.3% to 32.8%

In 2013, seven municipalities (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Manaus e Campos dos Goytacazes) concentrated about one fourth of the country's GDP. The 27 capitals accounted, together, for 32.8% of the national GDP. Rio de Janeiro had the biggest increase in terms of GDP participation (0.1 percentage points, whereas São Paulo recorded the biggest decrease (0.4 percentage points). In 2013, President Kennedy (ES) had the highest GDP per capita in the country (R$ 715,193.70) and Nina Rodrigues (MA), the lowest (R$ 3 241.29). Among the capitals, Vitória (ES) had the highest GDP per capita and Maceió, the lowest. Considering the economic activities, São Desidério (BA) had the biggest value added of Agriculture, whereas São Paulo was the leader in Industry, and also in Services. As for Public Administration, in 42.2% of the municipalities in the country more than one third of the economy depended on this sector. In 2013, seven municipalities (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Manaus e Campos dos Goytacazes) concentrated about one fouth of the country's GDP. Together, they accounted for approximately 25.0% of the national GDP and for 13.8% of the population. From 2010 to 2013, there were no significant changes among the municipalities with bigest participation in the GDP.

< P align=justify>Only 20 municipalities participation above 0.5% of the country's GDP. Among these, besides the seven leaders, there were five capitals: Porto Alegre (1.1%), Salvador (1.0%), Fortaleza (0.9%), Recife (0.9%) and Goiânia (0.8%). Other eight municipalities in the list amounted to 6.4% of the country's income. Osasco and Campinas (1.0% each); Guarulhos and São Bernardo do Campo (0.9% each); Barueri (0.8%); Jundiaí (0.7%); São José dos Campos and Sorocaba (0.5% each).

 

On the opposite side of the ranking, 1,388 municipalities accounted for approximately 1.0% of the national GDP and concentrated 3.5% of the population. This group included 74.6% of the municipalities of Piauí, 60.1% of the municipalities of Paraíba, 53.3% of those in Rio Grande do Norte and 52.5% of the municipalities of Tocantins.

Participation of Rio de Janeiro in Brazilian GDP recorded biggest increase

In relation to 2012, Rio de Janeiro had the biggest participation in the country's GDP, 0.1 percentage points, due to major infrastructure works.

The participation of São Paulo (SP) represented the main decrease (0.4 percentage points), mainly due to financial services, manufacturing industry and car trade.

Twenty seven Federation Units accounted for 32.8% of the economy in 2013

In relation to the participation of capitals in the Brazilian economy, in 2013, whereas the municipality of São Paulo (SP) was in the first position, Palmas had the last one. Florianópolis (SC) was the only capital which recorded the highest GDP among the municipalities of its state, which includes the leaders, Joinville and Itajaí.

In 2013, the relative participation of capitals in the national GDP (32.8%) was the lowest in the last few years. In 2010, capitals contributed with 34.3%; in 2011, with 33.7%, and in 2012, with 33.4%.

Em 2013, Presidente Kennedy (ES) tinha o maior PIBper capita do país

Per capita GDP in the country, in 2013, was R$ 26,444.63. The graph below presents the municipalities with the biggest GDP per capita, in decreasing order. President Kennedy (ES), Ilha Comprida (SP), Quissamã (RJ), São João da Barra (RJ) and Itapemirim (ES) were oil producers. In São Gonçalo do Rio Abaixo (MG0, there is a predominance of iron ore extraction. Louveira (SP) concentrated distribution centers. In Porto Real (RJ) there was car industry. Selvíria (MS) produced eucalyptus for pulp and paper industry and also had a hydroelectric plant. Triunfo (RS) was the headquarters of an important petrochemical plant.

Nina Rodrigues (MA) had the lowest per capita GDP (R$ 3,241.29) among all the municipalities in the country. This municipality was supported by the transfer of federal resources: 63.4% of its gross value added came from Public administration.

Among the capitals, Vitória (ES) had the highest per capita GDP (R$ 64, 001.91), corresponding to 2.4 times the per capita GDP in the country (R$ 26,444.63), whereas Maceió (AL) was on the opposite extreme (R$ 16,439.48).

For the 557 municipalities with the smallest GDP per capita in the country (the lowest ten positions), this indicator was below R$ 5,382.11. In this list were 56.7% of the municipalities of Maranhão, 54.5% of Piauí, 40.8% of Ceará and 31.2% of Bahia.

São Desidério (BA), Rio Verde (GO) and Sorriso (MT) are the leaders in terms of Agriculture

In 2013, the 166 municipalities leading the ranking of the activity formed approximately 25.0% of the gross value added of Brazil, whereas the 861 municipalities on the other extreme accounted for only 1.0%.

The leading municipality in the sector, São Desidério (BA), with an economy based on irrigated agriculture, was the main producer of upland cotton in the country. In Rio Verde (GO), the vice-leader, the integration between agriculture and food industry stimulated the transportation and services sector. Sorriso (MT), in the third position, is the main national producer of soybean and corn.

São Paulo, Campos dos Goytacazes and Rio de Janeiro are the leaders of Industry

In 2013, the 73 municipalities which led the ranking of this activity represented half of the gross value added of Industry and concentrated 30.2% of the population, whereas the 3,307 municipalities on the other extreme grouped only 1.0% and concentrated 16.7% of the population.

São Paulo (SP) remained as the main industrial zone in the country, accounting for 5.8% of th value added of Industry. Campos dos Goytacazes (RJ), due to the exploration of petroleum and natural gas, was the second n the ranking (3.3%), being followed by Rio de Janeiro (RJ), with 3.3%. Manaus (AM), with its industrial park, generated 1.9% of the gross value added of Industry. These municipalities have been the four leaders of industry since 2010.

São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasília aggregated 24% of the Services in the country /STRONG>

Figures about this segment exclude the gross value added of Public administration, health and education and social security, which is analyzed separately.

Three municipalities aggregated 24.0% of the gross value added of Services: São Paulo (15.0%), Rio de Janeiro (6.0%) and Brasília (3.0%). They concentrated 10.5% of the Brazilian population.

In 2013, the 34 leading municipalities in terms of Services accounted for half of the value added of this activity and for 26.5% of the population. The 2,126 municipalities on the other extreme of the ranking, together, were 1.0% of the value added of services and 7.0% of the population.

Together, the capitals amounted to 39.6% of the value added of this activity, in 2013. Among the 34 municipalities which aggregated half of the gross value added of Services, 17 were capitals.

42.2% of the Brazilian municipalities are extremely dependent on Public administration

Among the Brazilian municipalities, 2,349 (42.2%) had less than 1/3 of their economies depending on the Public administration, health and education and of Social security. In four municipalities the participation of Public administration in GDP surpassed 75.0%. Guamaré (RN), Uiramutã (RR), 87.6%; São José de Princesa (PB),84.3% and Santo Antônio dos Milagres (PI), 76.5%. In Guamará (RN) the gross value added of Administration was above the GDP, because the gross value added of the petroleum segment was negative.

Public administration represented more than 50% in 13 of the 15 municipalities of Roraima. The exceptions were Bonfim (49.1%) and the capital, Boa Vista (37.8%). The Brazilian capitals with the smallest contributions of this sector were São Paulo (6.3%), Vitória (7.4%) and Curitiba (8.3%).

Agriculture prevails in the economy of 57.3% of the municipalities

Except for the activity Public administration, health and education and Social security of the economy of all municipalities, it is possible to have a better view of the distribution of the other activities. In 2013, in this analysis, Agriculture was the main economic activity in more than half of the municipalities (57.3%).
