Services sector down (-5.0%) in January

In January, the services sector recorded decrease in volume (-5.0%), versus the January 2015 figure, the same result as in December (-5.0%) and slightly above that of November last year (-6.4%). The cumulative rate in the year stood at -3.7%. Nominal revenue of services fell (-0.1%) in January versus the same month a year before, against 0.3% in December and -0.9% in November. The cumulative rate of nominal revenue in 12 months was 1.1%. Among the activities, all subsectors recorded decreases: Services rendered to families (-4.1%); Information and communication services (-2.1%); Professional, administrative and complementary services (-9.1%); Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (-5.8%) and Other services (-7.9%). The special aggregate of Tourism activities changed by 0.5% in January, versus -1.6% in December and -1.9% in November. Click here to see the complete publication.

The contributions of segments to the overall volume rate were: Transportation, support services for transportation and mailing activities and Professional, administrative and complementary services (aboth with -1,7 p.p.), Information and communication services (-0.8 p.p.), Other services (-0.5 p.p.) and Services rendered to families (-0.3 p.p.).

Versus January 2015 all the five Service activities recorded decrease

Services rendered to families recorded decrease (-4.1%) in January, over the same month in the previous year, versus -7.3% in December and -6.6% in November, having kept a stable series of negative volume chnages since May 2014. The cumulative index in 12 months was -5.5%. Lodging and food services and Other services rendered to families also declined: -2.9% and -11.6%, respectively.

Information and communication services recorded decrease (-2.1%) in January, in relation to the same month a year ago, versus -0.4% in December and -4.3% in November. The cumulative change in 12 months was -0.2%. In the same comparison, Information and communication services fell (-2.5%), mainly Telecommunications (-3.0%) and Information gtechnology services (-0.8%). Audiovisual, publishing and news agency services recorded an increase of 1.3%.

Professional, administrative and complementary services recorded decrease in the volume of services (-9.1%) in January, versus the same month a year ago, with decreases of 8.8% in December and 6.7% in November. The cumulative volume change in 12 months was -4.8%. Technical professional services fell
(-14.6%), and also Administrative and complementary services (-7.4%).

Transportation, support services for transportation and mailing activities recorded decrease (-5.8%) in January, in relation to the same month a year ago. In December and November there were decreases: -6.9% and -8.5%, respectively. The cumulative volume change in 12 months was -6.1%. By type, the results were: Land transportation (-12.1%), Water transportation (6.5%) andAir transportation, (24.7%). The activityStorage, support activities for trabnsportation and mailing activities fell by 3.6%.

Other services recorded decrease in volume (-7.9%) in January, versus -10.3% in December and -7.7% in November. The cumulative index in 12 months was -9.0%.

The volume of this special segment, Tourism activities increased 0.5% in January, versus January 2015, after recording decreases of 1.6% in December and of 1.9% in November. The cumulative change in 12 months stayed at -1.9%.

Volume rate of Services falls in 20 of the 27 Federation Units

In relation to January 2015, the Services sector recorded a decrease in seven of the 27 Federation Units: Mato Grosso (17.5%), Federal District (13.3%), Roraima (11.2%), Alagoas (6.3%), Mato Grosso do Sul (3.8%), Rondônia (1.4%) and Ceará (0.4%). The most significant negative changes in volume were those of Amapá (-19.1%), Amazonas (-14.0%) and Pernambuco (-11.4%).

In the same comparison, the special segment of Tpurism activities recorded an increase in the Federal District (18.3%), São Paulo (1.8%), Ceará (1.7%), Goiás (0.6%) and Bahia (0.2%). Decline was observed in Rio Grande do Sul (-7.0%), Espírito Santo (-5.4%), Minas Gerais (-3.4%), Paraná (-3.1%), Pernambuco (-1.8%), Rio de Janeiro (-1.7%) and Santa Catarina (-0.9%).
