* Seasonally-Adjusted Series

In the seasonally adjusted series, the reduced pace of the national industrial output was followed by 12 out of the 14 places surveyed between November and December. The steepest declines were recorded in Bahia (-7.9%), Santa Catarina (-5.9%) and Goiás (-5.3%). Considering the December´s figures, the first place halted three months of consecutive positive rates, which posted a cumulative expansion of 5.8%; the second accelerated the downward pace against October (-1.2%) and November (-3.6%); and the last place registered the third consecutive negative rate, recording a cumulative loss of 6.4% in this period. Pernambuco (-4.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (-3.9%), Espírito Santo (-3.3%), São Paulo (-3.2%) and the Northeast Region (-3.0%) also reported more intense drops than the the national average (-2.8%), whereas Pará (-2.5%), Minas Gerais (-2.3%), Paraná (-0.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (-0.4%) were the other places that posted negative indexes in December 2014. On the other hand, Amazonas (3.2%) and Ceará (1.7%) registered positive figures in December.

Still considering the seasonally-adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the overall industry declined 1.2% in the quarter ended in December against that in the previous month, stressing the downward pace showed in November (-0.5%), when it halted two consecutive months of slightly positive rates: September (0.2%) and October (0.1%). In regional terms, 11 places reported negative rates, highlighted by the sharp declines registered in Santa Catarina (-3.5%), Minas Gerais (-3.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.7%), Goiás (-2.1%) and São Paulo (-2.1%). Rio de Janeiro (1.3%) recorded the main advance in December 2014.

Compared with the same month a year ago, the industrial sector reduced 2.7% in December 2014, a drop followed by ten out of the 15 places surveyed. December 2014 (22 days) had one more business day than the same month last year (21). In December, the most intense declines were posted in Pernambuco (-8.2%) and São Paulo (-7.8%), pressed by the reduced manufacturing in the sectors of transportation equipment (transportation ships, including oil tankers), food products (crystallized sugar), basic metals (steel rebars, aluminum bars, profiles or rebars, carbon steel ingots, blocks, rods or plates and aluminum plates and foils), non-metallic mineral products (Portland cement and glass bottles, demijohns and flasks for packaging) and other chemicals (polyethylene terephthalate - PET and nitrogen manure or fertilizers), in the first place; of food products (crystallized and VHP sugar), motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (cars, trucks and car pieces), machinery and equipment (motor graders, valves, taps and gates, parts and pieces for harvesters, trailers and semi-trailers for agricultural use and wheel loaders) and coke, petroleum products and biofuels (ethyl alcohol and motor gasoline), in the second. Goiás (-5.2%), Amazonas (-5.1%) and Minas Gerais (-4.5%) also reported steeper drops than the national average (-2.7%), while Bahia (-2.6%), Santa Catarina (-2.3%), the Northeast Region (-1.8%), Rio de Janeiro (-1.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-0.1%) were the other places that recorded negative rates in December 2014. Espírito Santo (12.8%) registered the most intense advance, leveraged by the positive behavior coming from the mining and quarrying sector (pelletized iron ore and crude petroleum oil). The other positive figures were registered in Mato Grosso (6.1%), Paraná (3.7%), Pará (1.4%) and Ceará (1.0%).

In the cumulative indicator in the January-December 2014 period, against the same period last year, the reduced overall production reached ten out of the 15 places surveyed, four of them declining more than the industry average (-3.2%): São Paulo (-6.2%), Paraná (-5.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (-4.3%) and Amazonas (-3.9%). Rio de Janeiro (-3.0%), Minas Gerais (-2.9%), Ceará (-2.9%), Bahia (-2.8%), Santa Catarina (-2.2%) and the Northeast Region (-0.2%) completed the group of places which closed the first quarter of 2014 with negative results. In these places, the lower dynamism was particularly influenced by factors related to the reduced manufacturing of capital goods (especially those oriented to transportation equipment - tractor trucks for trailers and semi-trailers, trucks and vehicles for transportation of goods), intermediate goods (car pieces, textiles, steel products, fabricated metal products, basic petrochemicals, thermoplastic resins and pesticides) and durable consumer goods (cars, white goods, motorcycles and furniture). Pará (8.1%) and Espírito Santo (5.6%) posted the highest expansions, leveraged by the positive behavior of the mining and quarrying sector (iron ore). Mato Grosso (3.0%), Goiás (1.7%) and Pernambuco (0.1%) also reported positive rates in the cumulative index of the year.

By declining 3.2% in December, the annualized rate, cumulative indicator in the last 12 months, repeated the figure registered in the previous month and maintained the downward trend started last March (2.0%). In regional terms, ten out of the 15 places surveyed recorded negative rates in December 2014 and nine showed lower dynamism against the index of last November. The main losses between November and December were posted in Goiás (from 3.5% to 1.7%), Pernambuco (from 1.4% to 0.1%), Amazonas (from -3.1% to -3.9%), Mato Grosso (from 3.5% to 3.0%) and Pará (from 8.6% to 8.1%), whereas Espírito Santo (from 4.3% to 5.6%) registered the highest advance between the two periods.
