In January, the Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) changed 1.24% and stood 0.46 percentage points above December's rate (0.78%). This was the highest rate since February 2003 (1.57%). The cumulative index in the last twelve months (7.14%) was the highest since September 2011 (7.31%).
In January 2014, the rate was at 0.55%.

As shown in the table below, the increases in the expenditure on Food and Beverages (1.48%), Housing (2.42%) and Transportation (1.83%) accounted for 85% of the monthly index (or 1.06 percentage points).

Considering food products items recorded significant increases, the main highlights being potatoes (38.09%), pinto beans (17.95%) and tomatoes (12,35%). The table below presents the main increases:

In Housing (2,42%), (2.42%), the group with the biggest result, the highlight was electricity, whose hike of 8.27% represented a change by 0.24 percentage points, the highest in the month. Except for the metropolitan area ofSalvador, which recorded 0.76% due to the decrease of taxes, the other had significant increases: Porto Alegre (11.66%), São Paulo (11.46%), Goiânia (9.37%), Belo Horizonte (8.25%), Belém (8.02%), Curitiba (7.95%), Brasília (7.94%), Campo Grande (7.84%), Vitória (7.63%), Rio de Janeiro (5.98%), Recife (4.67%), Fortaleza (2.03%), Salvador (0.76%).

Porto Alegre recorded part of the readjustment of 22.41%, in effect since December 08 for the prices of one of the concessionaires, whereas in São Paulo (11.46%), %), the price adjustment of one of the concessionaires was 3.77%, starting on January 08. Besides that and some changes in the value of taxes, January marked the effect of the tariff system, a charging model for the expenditure on thermal plants, which went into effect on January 1st.

Also considering Housing, other expenses became higher from December to January: water and sewage fares (1.42%), residential rent (1.22%), manpower for small repair(0.95%) and condominium fees (0.81%).

In water and sewage fares (1,42%), (1.42%), there were increases only in Campo Grande (11.19%), where the price adjustment of 12.86% started on January 03, and São Paulo (5.83%), with price adjustment of 6.47% since December 27.

In the group Transportation (1.83%), the highlight is the increased expenditure on public transportation: urban buses (8.02%), intercity buses (6.59%), interstate buses (1.21%), subway (9.23%), cabs (2.63%), train (8.95%).

Besides, in the group Transportation, the prices of other important consumption items rose from one month to the other, the main highlights being new cars (1.03%) and used ones (1.38%), car repair (1.97%) and ethanol (1,47%).

The item cigarettes (6.89%) influenced the group Personal expenses (1.68%), together with domestic workers (1.50%) and excursions (5.62%). The hike of cigaettes occurred due t price adjustments by 8%, on December 31 and January 12.

The highest regional index was that of the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro (1.71%), affected byurban buses (11.67%) with readjustment of 13.34% on January 03 and intercity buses(9.76%) with readjustment of 12.46% on January 10. The item electricity (5.98%) was also a contribution to the index on this área. The three items, together, accounted for 0.83 percentage points of impact and for 49% of the rate in the region. The metropolitan area of Recife (0.57%) presented the lowest index in the month, the main highlights being food products, which recorded 0.79%. IPCA has been calculated by IBGE since 1980. It refers to families with monthly income of one to 40 minimum wages, whatever the source, and it encompasses ten Metropolitan Areas in the country, besides Brasília and the municipalities of Goiânia, Campo Grande and Brasília.

In order to estimate the index of the month, the prices collected from December 30, 2014 to January 28 of 2015 (reference) were compared with the prices in force from November 28 to December 29, 2014 (base).

In January, INPC reaches 1.48%

The Índice Nacional de Preços ao Consumidor - INPC changed by 1.48% in January, being above the result of 0.62% recorded in December, by 0.86 percentage points. This was the highest rate since January 2003 (2.47%). In terms of the cumulative index in twelve months the index was 7.13%, significantly above the rate of 6.23%, of the previous twelve months. It is the highest cumulative INPC in 12 months since April 2013 (7.16%). In January 2014 INPC was 0.63%.

Food products recorded 1.48% in January, whereas in December the rate was 1.08%. The group of non-food products changed 1.48% in January , above the December rate (0.42%).

The highest index was that of the metropolitan área of Rio de Janeiro (2.41%), affected by urban buses (11.67%) with price adjustment of 13.34% on January 03 and intercity buses (9.76%) with readjustment of 12.46% on January 10. The item electricity (5.61%) also contributed to the index of this area. The three items, together, accounted for 1.65 percentage points of impact and were responsible for 68% of the era in the area. The lowest indexes were those of Recife and Brasília (both with 0.78%). The table below pesents the indexes by area surveyed.
