Continuous PNAD: unemployment reaches 9.5% in the quarter ended in January 2016

The unemployment rate of the moving quarter ended in January 2016 was estimated at 9.5% for Brazil, being above the rate of the same quarter in the previous year (6.8%) and surpassing the figure recorded in the moving quarter ended in October 2015 (9.0%). The unemployed population (9.6 million persons) increased 6.0% (545 thousand persons more) in relation to the quarter August-October 2015 and 42.3% (2.9 million persons more) in the comparison with the same quarter in 2015.

The employed population (91.7 million persons) recorded a decrease of 0.7% versus that of the quarter August-October 2015 (656 thousand persons). Versus the same quarter in 2015, there was decrease of 1.1% (1.0 million persons). The number of workers with a formal contract in the private sector was stable in relation to the result of the quarter August-October 2015. In comparison with the same quarter in the previous year, the recorded decrease was 3.6% (1.3 million persons).

The average usual real earnings from all the activities (R$ 1,939) was stable versus the figure recorded in August-October 2015 (R$ 1,948) and fell by 2.4% versus the result of the same quarter a year ago (R$ 1,988). The usual real wage bill earned by employed persons, from all the activities (R$ 172.8 billion) and was stable versus the figure of Aust-October 2015, having recorded a decrease of 3.1% versus the same quarter a year ago. PNAD indicators are calculated for moving quarters, with information relative to the three latest editions of the survey. The rate for the quarter ending in January 2016 was calculated according to data collected in November/2015, December/2015 and  January/2016. Information used for the calculation of indicators for the moving quarters ending in January and December, for example, have a percentage of repetition of about 66%. This repetition is only over after an interval of two moving quarters. More information about the methodology ia available here.

In the quarter November/2015-Januaryj/2016, there were about 9.6 million unemployed persons in Brazil. This estimate for the quarter August-October 2015 corresponded to 9.1 million, representing and increase of 6.0% (545 thousand persons). In comparison with the same quarter last year, this estimate increased by 42.3% (2.9 million persons).

 

 

The number of employed persons was estimated at 91.7 million, with a decrease of 0.7% versus the figure in the quarter August-October 2015 (-656 thousand persons). In comparison with the same quarter a year ago, there was decrease of 1.1% (-1.0 milllion persons).

 

 

By employment type, the number of workers with a formal contract in the private sector remained stable in relation to the figure recorded in the quarter August-October 2015. Versus the same quarter a year ago, there was decrease of 3.6% (-1.3 million persons). The category workers without a formal contract in the private sector recorded a decrease of 4.2% in relation to the quarter August-October (-425 thousand persons) e decrease of 5.9% versus the result of the same quarter a year ago (-614 thousand persons). The participation of employers fell by 4.0% in comparison with the quarter August-October 2015 (-161 thousand persons) and did not record any significant change versus the same quarter a year ago. The category self-employed workers recorded na increase of 2.8% in relation to he period August-October 2015 (622 thousand persons) and, in comparison with the same quarter in 2015, there was an increase of 6.1% (1.3 million persons).

The analysis of number of employed persons by gruoups of activity , ein relation to August-October 2015, there was decrease in general industry (-4.1%) and in information, communication, and financial, real state and administrative activities (-4.9%); and increase inconstruction (3.3%). In the other groups, no significant change was observed.

Versus the quarter November/ 2014- January/2015, there were increases in domestic services (5.2%); transportation, storage and mailing (4.3%); lodging and feeding (4.1%); and public administration, defense, social security, education, human health and social services (2.1%). Decreases were observed in general industry (-8.5%), information, communication and financila, real estate, professional and administrative activities (-7.7%) and agriculture, livestock, forestry, fishing and aquiculture (-2.4%). The other groups of activities recorded no significant changes.

The average usual real earnings from all the activities of employed persons was estimated at R$ 1,939, recording stability versus the quarter Augus-October 2015 (R$ 1,948) and decreae of 2.4% versus the same quarter a year ago (R$ 1,988).

In comparison with the quarter August-October 2015, only the group domestic services recorded an increase in the average earnings (1.8%). In the other groups of activity, there was stabilty. Versus the same quarter a year ago, there was decrease in transportation, storage and mailing (-7.2%) and in ctrade, repair of motor vehicles and of motorcycles (-5.0%).

Versus the quarter August-October 2015, there was increase of the average earnings of self-employed workers (2.4%), of workers in the public sector (2.1%) and domestic workers (1.8%). In comparison with the quarter November 2014 -January 2015, there was decrease of the average earnings of self-employed workers (-4.1%). In the other categories of emplyment type, there was stability in earnings.
