The SDGs are a detailed guide for the actions in the three dimensions of the sustainable development – economic, social and environmental – in every country up to the deadline of 2030. They can be seen HERE.
SDGs comprise economic, social and environmental dimensions
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals include more than a hundred of global indicators, which foresee, up to 2030, a world free from poverty, hunger, diseases and privation, fear and violence wherever life thrives.
A world of universal literacy, of universal and equitable access to quality education at every level, of health care and social protection, where social, mental and physical welfare is ensured. A world in which the right to drinking water and sanitation is reassured and where hygiene is better; and where food is sufficient, safe, accessible and nutritious. Where the human environment is safe, resilient and sustainable, and where the universal access to energy is affordable, reliable and sustainable.
In addition, the SDGs aim at a world of universal observance of human rights and human dignity, of the rule of law, of Justice, of equality and equal treatment; of race, ethnicity and cultural diversity; and of equal opportunities, which allow the complete satisfaction of the human potential and contribute to shared prosperity.
And also a world in which every country provides sustainable and inclusive economic growth and decent work for all. A world in which the technology development and application are sensitive to climate, respect biodiversity and are resilient. Lastly, a world in which humanity lives in harmony with nature and wild animals and other species are protected.
The implementation of the 17 SDGs will require a sound set of indicators to support public policies from every government level, as well as to follow up progress and ensure the transparency and responsibility of every actor, including the private sector and civil society.
To this end, the access to disaggregate data and statistical information of high quality will be an important tool to plan and implement strategies, plans and public policies in every part of the world. In the same way, the transparent access to statistical information on the sustainable development through clear indicators will be a powerful instrument for citizens, civil society organizations and press to better understand and take part in the global effort for the 2030 Agenda.
IBGE, a global leader in formulation of indicators to monitor SDGs
The meeting on the Global Indicators of Sustainable Development for Monitoring the 2030 Agenda will follow the agenda established in the first Meeting of Information Producers, held from June 29 to July 1st, 2015 at the IBGE, aiming at the Post-2015 Development Agenda. At that time, 70 Brazilian institutions and more than 350 attendees discussed and technically assessed the global indicators proposed for monitoring the sustainable development goals.
In the 3rd Meeting of Producers and Users of Social, Economic and Territorial Information, which will be held by the IBGE from June 6 to 10 in Rio de Janeiro, the 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development and the indicators for monitoring the SDGs will guide the discussions.
The IBGE leads the formulation and approval of the indicators for monitoring the SDGs, particularly after the election of President Wasmália Bivar as the first Latin-American woman to chair the UN Statistical Commission last March. In the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on Sustainable Development Goals Indicators – IAEG-SDGs, created in the 46th Session of the UN Statistical Commission in March 2015, the IBGE represented the countries from Mercosur and Chile.
Comprising 28 member states and regional and international institutions as observers, the IAEG-SDGs is responsible for developing the framework of indicators at global level. Previously gathered in New York and Bangkok, this group continued to prepare a detailed set of global indicators for sustainable development in the economic, environmental and social dimensions at its third meeting from March 30 to April 1st, 2016 in Mexico City.
The final set of indicators will be submitted to the 71st UN General Assembly in September 2016, in order to be adopted by every member state.
