The IBGE makes available today (04/28/2016) the Land Use and Land Cover Map of Mato Grosso, in digital vector file format (shape), at the reference scale of 1:250,000 (1cm= 2,500m). The product, which can be accessed here, results from the interpretation of 25-meter- and 30-meter-resolution satellite images of 2014, with the support of field survey, complemented by textual and statistical information. This work brings data details of the map published in June 2015, which was released in pdf format and at a 1:1,800,000 scale (1cm=18,000m).

This is one of the outcomes of the Systematic Mapping of Land Use and Land Cover per Federation Unit, implemented by the IBGE. The information contained in the map portrays the dynamics of land use and is fundamental for land planning and management. It is an important support tool in the assessment of the impacts over natural resources, detecting transformation processes and also allowing for the assessment of socio-environmental conflicts. The digital vector format of this map is meant for experts, since it allows for data manipulation in any environment that runs vector files.

The mapping shows that, in more than 40% of the state of Mato Grosso, there is still a prevalence of large-sized animal farming and slaughter cattle. This kind of activity is especially represented in the south of the State, in the northeast, in the region of the Araguaia and in the north among the regions of Alta Floresta and Nova Bandeirantes.

The production of grains and fibers presents more concentration in the central-west region of the state, especially in the municipalities of Sinop, Sorriso and Lucas do Rio Verde, and in the center-south region, where the municipalities of Campo Verde and Primavera do Leste stand out as big producers. All over the state the activity is found in different levels of intensity and, in some areas, it is associated with other activities, such as large-sized animal farming, or other cultures, in this case with lower spatial significance and spread throughout the whole state. Their main characteristic is the use of modern agriculture techniques, as irrigation and use of adapted species - which has led to an increasing productivity.

Wild crop harvesting still prevails in the northeast of the state and in the north, where there is a larger concentration of forest areas.
