Industrial output up in 10 of the 14 areas surveyed in December

The increase of pace in the national industrial output between November and December 2016, in the seasonally adjusted series, was driven by ten of the 14 areas surveyed, with a highlight to the advance of 12.4% recorded by Ceará, which eliminated the 8.4% loss accumulated between August and November. Rio Grande do Sul (6.3%), Espírito Santo (5.1%), the Northeast Region (4.9%) and Santa Catarina (3.6%) also reported growth above the industry's average (2.3%), whereas Minas Gerais (2.3%), Goiás (1.4%), Bahia(1.4%), Paraná (0.8%) and Pernambuco (0.6%) closed the set of places with positive rates this month. On the other hand, Amazonas (-2.0%) and São Paulo (-1.5%) had the sharpest negative result of the month, both offsetting the growth seen in November: 4.1% and 1.4%, respectively. The other negative rates were registered by Rio de Janeiro (-0.9%) and Pará (-0.7%).

Still concerning the seasonally adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average for the industry overall pointed to an increase of 0.5% in the quarter ended in December 2016 against the previous month's level, interrupting the downward trend started in July 2016. In regional terms, still in relation to the movement of this index on margin, seven places registered positive rates, highlighted by the steepest advances in Ceará (3.2%), Paraná (2.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.5%) and Espírito Santo (1.5%). On the other hand, Pernambuco (1.0%), Goiás (-0.8%) and São Paulo (-0.8%) recorded the main decreases in the December 2016.

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the industrial sector reduced 0.1% in December 2016, showing negative figures in six out of the 15 places surveyed. This month, Bahia (-9.3%) and Goiás (-9.0%) recorded the sharpest drops. Mato Grosso (-2.3%), Northeast Region (-0.8%), São Paulo (-0.6%) and Rio de Janeiro (-0.4%) also registered negative rates this month. On the other hand, Pará (10.1%) reported the highest increase in December 2016. The remaining positive results were observed in Paraná (6.5%), Santa Catarina (6.3%), Pernambuco (5.6%), Ceará (3.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.3%), Amazonas (3.0%), Minas Gerais (2.2%) and Espírito Santo (2.1%).

In the cumulative indicator in the January-December 2016 period, against the same period a year ago, the reduced overall production reached 14 out of the 15 places surveyed, four of them declining more than the national average (-6.6%): Espírito Santo (-18.8%), Amazonas (-10.8%), Pernambuco (-9.5%) and Goiás (-6.7%). Minas Gerais (-6.2%), São Paulo (-5.5%), Ceará (-5.2%), Bahia (-5.2%), Paraná (-4.3%), Rio de Janeiro (-4.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (-3.8%), Santa Catarina (-3.3%), Northeast Region (-3.1%) and Mato Grosso (-1.1%) close the set of places with negative results in the 12 months of the year. On the other hand, Pará (9.5%) recorded the sole advance in the cumulative index in the year.

In regional terms, in the cumulative index of the last 12 months, 14 out of the 15 places surveyed recorded negative rates in December 2016, but 12 showed higher dynamism against the index of last November. The major pace gains between November and December were recorded by Amazonas (-13.3% to -10.8%), Pernambuco (-11.1% to -9.5%), Paraná (-5.9% to -4.3%), Ceará (-6.6% to -5.2%), Espírito Santo (-20.2% to -18.8%), Santa Catarina (-4.5% to -3.3%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-4.9% to -3.8%), whereas Mato Grosso (-0.1% to -1.1%) registered the major loss between the two periods.
