Continuous PNAD: unemployment rate at 11.8% in the quarter ended in September 2016

The unemployment rate was estimated at 11.8% in the moving quarter ended in September 2016. It represents a growth of 0.5 percentage points (p.p.) in relation to the period between April and June this year (11.3%). Compared with the same moving quarter in the previous year, from July to September 2015, when the rate was estimated at 8.9%, an increase was also recorded (2.9 p.p.).

The unemployed population (12.0 million persons) rose 3.8% (437 thousand more persons) in relation to the quarter from April to June 2016 and increased 33.9% (3.0 million more persons) when compared with the same quarter in 2015.

Conversely, the employed population (89.8 million persons) recorded a reduction of 1.1%, when compared to the quarter from April to June 2016 (963 thousand less persons). In the comparison with the same quarter in 2015, a drop of 2.4% (2,3 million less persons) was registered.

The number of workers with a formal contract (34.1 million persons) in the private sector registered a 0.9% drop over the quarter of April to June 2016 (314 thousand less persons). In the comparison with the same quarter of the previous year, the reduction was of 3.7% (1.3 million less persons).

The average usual real earnings from all jobs (R$ 2,015) grew 0.9% against the quarter between April and June 2016 (R$ 1,997) and fell 2.1% in relation to the same quarter last year (R$ 2,059).

The usual real wage bill earned by the employed persons from all jobs (R$ R$ 176,8 billion) did not record a significant change in relation to the quarter from April to June 2016, and fell 3.8% over the same quarter a year ago.

The indicators of the Continuous PNAD are calculated for moving quarters, using the information of the last three consecutive months of the survey. The rate of the moving quarter ended in September 2016 was calculated based on the information collected in July/2016, August/2016 and September/2016. For example, the information used for the calculation of the indicators for the moving quarters ended in September and August has an amount of data repetition around 66%. This repetition only ceases to exist after an interval of two moving quarters. More information on the methodology of the survey can be found here.

About 12.0 million persons were unemployed in Brazil in the quarter between July and September 2016. The contingent grew 3.8% (437 thousand more people) against that of the quarter from April to June of 2016, when the unemployment was estimated at 11.6 million people. Compared with the same quarter a year ago, this estimate increased 33.9% (3.0 million more persons).

The number of employed persons was estimated at nearly 89.8 million, recording a reduction of 1.1% when compared with the quarter from April to June 2016 (963 thousand less persons). Compared with the same quarter a year ago, there was a drop of 2.4% (2.3 million less persons).

By employment type, in the period from July to September of 2016, the contingent of employed persons in the private sector with a formal contract (34.1 million persons) recorded a decrease of 0.9% over the quarter from April to June of 2016 (314 thousand less persons). In comparison with the same quarter a year ago the reduction was of 3.7% (-1.3 million persons).

The categories employed persons in the private sector without a formal contract (10.3 million persons),domestic workers (6.1 million persons) and employed persons in the public sector (11.3 million persons) remained stable in relation to the quarter from April to June of 2016 and over the same period a year ago.

The contingent of employers (4.1 million people) had a growth of 10.1% (376 thousand more persons) in relation to the quarter from April to June 2016. In relation to the same period a year ago, this contingent remained statistically stable.

The category self-employed (21.9 million persons) had a reduction of 4.7% in relation to quarter from April to June of 2016 (1.1 million less persons). In the comparison with the quarter from July to September of 2015, the decrease was of 1.7% (378 thousand less persons).

In the analysis of the contingent of the employed according to groups of activity, in relation to the quarter from April to June of 2016, there was reduction of 4.2% in Agriculture, forestry and fishing (396 thousand less persons), of 3.7% in construction (274 thousand less persons), of 1.8% in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (312 thousand less persons) and of 2.1% in domestic services (133 thousand less persons).

There was an increase in the contingent of 4.3% in lodging and food (192 thousand more persons) and of 3.9% in other services (163 thousand more persons). In the other groups of activity, there was no statistically relevant change.

Compared to the quarter from July to September of 2015, there was reduction in the contingent of employed persons of 4.7% in Agriculture, forestry and fishing (442 thousand less persons), of 10.1% ingeneral industry (1.3 million less persons), of 2.8% in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles(501 thousand less persons) and of 9.3% in information, communication and financial, real estate, professional, and administrative activities (977 thousand less persons).

There was increase in the contingent in the following groups: 5.2% in transportation, storage and mail (220 thousand more persons); 8.0% in lodging and food (345 thousand more persons) and 2.0% in public administration, defense, social security, education, human health and social services (306 thousand more persons). The other groups did not change.

The average usual real earnings from all jobs of employed persons were estimated at R$ 2,015, recording increase against the quarter from April to June 2016 (R$ 1,997) and decrease in relation to the same moving quarter a year ago (R$ 2,059).

No statistically significant change of the average earnings by employment type, in relation to the quarter from April to June 2016 was recorded. In the comparison with the quarter from July a September de 2015, the employers had decrease in the usual real average earnings (-9.3%). The other categories were stable in terms of average earnings.

In the comparison with the quarter from April to June 2016, the only average earnings to record a change was in the group of activity of Agriculture, forestry and fishing (4.6%), the average earnings from other groups remained stable. Over the same quarter a year ago, just lodging and food (-7.6%) recorded a change in the average earnings, the others did not record any significant changes.

The average usual real earnings of employed persons taking all jobs in consideration were estimated at R$ 176.8 billion, not recording a significant change in relation to the quarter from April to June 2016, and presenting a reduction of 3.8% over the same quarter in the previous year.
