* Seasonally-Adjusted Series

Still concerning the seasonally adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the overall industry pointed to a decline of 0.8% in the quarter ended in January 2015 against the level of the previous month, after also dropping in November (-0.5%) and in December (-1.4%). In regional terms, still in relation to the movement of this index on the margin, ten places registered negative rates, highlighted by the sharp declines reported by Bahia (-5.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.9%), Santa Catarina (-2.5%), Goiás (-1.7%) and the Northeast Region (-1.5%). Conversely, Pernambuco (3.7%) recorded the main advance in January 2015.

Compared with the same month a year ago, the industrial sector reduced 5.2% in January 2015, a drop followed by 11 out of the 15 places surveyed. In January, the most intense declines were posted in Amazonas (-12.4%), Bahia (-12.1%), Paraná (-12.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-11.3%), pressed, at a great extent, by the reduced production in the sectors of computer, electronic and optical products (TV sets), in the first place; of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel fuel, fuel oil, naphtha for the petrochemical industry, motor gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas), influenced, at a great extent, by a shutdown in an important producing unit of this sector, in the second; of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (tractor trucks for trailers and semi-trailers, cars and trucks), coke, petroleum products and biofuels (fuel oil, motor gasoline, diesel oil and liquefied petroleum gas) and machinery and equipment (harvesters and farm tractors), in the third; and of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (cars, trailers and semi-trailers and car pieces) and machinery and equipment (harvesters, wall, window or portable air conditioners, including the split systems, metal silos and parts and pieces for harvesters), in the last place. Santa Catarina (-8.0%), the Northeast Region (-5.9%) and São Paulo (-5.4%) also recorded more intense drops than the national average (-5.2%), whereas Ceará (-5.1%), Minas Gerais (-3.7%), Rio de Janeiro (-3.1%) and Goiás (-2.1%) completed the set of places with negative rates in January 2015. On the other hand, Espírito Santo (18.2%) registered the most intense advance in January, leveraged, at a large extent, by the positive behavior coming from the mining and quarrying sector (pelletized iron ore and crude petroleum oil). The other positive figures were registered in Pará (6.4%), Mato Grosso (5.2%) and Pernambuco (3.3%).

By declining 3.5% in January 2015, the annualized rate - cumulative indicator in the last 12 months - maintained the downward trend started last March (2.0%) and registered the most intense negative result since January 2010 (-4.8%). In regional terms, 11 out of the 15 places surveyed recorded negative rates in January 2015 and eight showed lower dynamism against the index of last December. The main losses between December and January were posted in Amazonas (from -3.9% to -5.6%), Paraná (from -5.5% to -6.6%) and Rio Grande do Sul (from -4.3% to -5.4%), whereas Espírito Santo (from 5.6% to 7.3%) reported the highest advance between the two periods.
