Continuous PNAD: unemployment rate stays at 10.9% in quarter ending in March 2016

The unemployment rate in the moving quarter ending in March 2016 was estimated at 10.9%, 1.9 percentage points above the rate in the quarter ended in December 2015 (9.0%) and 3.0 percentage points above that in the same quarter in 2015 (7.9%). The unemployed population (11.1 million persons) stood 22.2% (2.0 million persons) above the contingent reported between October and December 2015. Compared with the same quarter last year, this estimate rose 39.8%, resulting in an increase of 3.2 million unemployed persons in the workforce. The employed population (90.6 million persons) reduced by 1.7% when compared with the quarter from October to December 2015. When compared with the same quarter in the previous year, a drop of 1.5% was registered, representing less 1.4 million persons. The number of employed persons with a formal contract (34.6 million) dropped in both comparison periods. The decrease was of -2.2% against the quarter between October and December 2015. Compared with the same quarter a year ago, the retreat was of 4.0%, approximately less 1.4 million persons in this condition. The average usual real earnings from all jobs (R$1,966) remained stable against the quarter from October to December 2015 (R$1,961) and fell 3.2% in relation to the same quarter last year (R$2,031). The usual real wage bill earned from all jobs (R$173.5 billion) remained stable in relation to the quarter between October and December 2015 and dropped 4.1% against the same quarter in the previous year. Continuous PNAD indicators are calculated for moving quarters, and use information of the last three months of the survey. The rate for the moving quarter ended in March 2016 was calculated according to information collected in January/2016, February/2016 and March/2016. In the information used for the calculation of the indicators for the moving quarters ended in February and March, for example, there was a percentage of data repetition of about 66%. In the quarterly moving quarter ended in March 2016, there were about 11.1 millionunemployed persons in Brazil. This estimate in October-December 2015 corresponded to 9.1 million, representing and increase of 22.2%, or 2.0 million persons more in this group. In comparison with the same quarter a year ago, this estimate increased 39.8%, meaning an increase of 3.2 million unemployed persons in the workforce.

 

 

The number of employed persons was estimated at 90.6 million. It was observed that this population recorded a decrease of 1.7% in comparison with that of the period October-December 2015. Versus the same quarter a year ago, there was decrease of 1.5%, accounting for a decline of 1.5%, that is, by 1.4 million persons.

 

 

The number of workers with an employment contract signed in the private sector fell by 2.2% in comparison with that of the quarter October-December 2015 and by 4.0% versus the same quarter a year ago. The category of self-employed workers recorded an increase of 1.2% versus the figure in October-December 2015, which meant an increment of 274 thousand persons in this group. Versus the quarter January-March 2015, there was increase of 6.5%, meaning an increment of 6.5% or 1.4 million persons more. The participation of employers recorded a decrease of 5.8% in relation to the quarter October-December 2015; versus the January-March period, there was decrease of 8.6%.

In the analysis of the number of employed persons by groups of activity, relative to the quarter October-December 2015, there was decline of 5.2% in overall industry (-645 thousand persons), of 4.8% in construction (-380 thousand persons), of 1.9% in public administration, defense, social security, education, human health and social services (-299 thousand persons) and 1.6% in trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (-280 thousand persons). No statistical significant change was recorded in the other groups of activity.

Versus the quarter January-March 2015, there was increase in transportation, storage and mailing, 4.3% (184 thousand persons); domestic services, 4.3% (258 thousand persons); lodging and feeding, 4.0% (173 thousand persons); and public administration, defense, social security, education, human health and social services, 2.4% (358 thousand persons). In the groups of general industry and information, communication and financial, real estate, financial, professional and administrative activities, there was decrease of 11.5% (-1.5 million persons) and of 6.3% (-656 thousand persons), respectively. The remaining groups recorded stability.

Average usual real earnings from all the activities of the employed population was estimated at R$ 1,966, with stability in comparison with the quarter October-December 2015 (R$ 1,961) and decrease of 3.2% in relation to the same quarter a year ago (R$ 2,031). Against the quarter October-December 2015, domestic workers were the only ones recording increase of average earnings (2,3%) and the other categories did not record significant changes in earnings. In relation to the quarter January-March 2015, in the category of self-employed workers, there was decrease of 3.9% in average earnings. The other categories of employment type remained stable in terms of earnings.

In relation to the quarter October-December 2015, there was decrease of 4.0% in the group agriculture, livestock, forestry, fishing and aquiculture and increase of 2.3% in the group of domestic services. The other groups did not record changes. Versus the quarter January-March 2015, there was decrease of 8.0% in the arnings from agriculture, livestock, forestry, fishing and aquiculture, and of 5.5% in trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles.

The usual real wage bill from all the activities earned by the employed population was estimated at R$ 173.5 billion reais, pointing to stability in comparison with the quarter October-December 2015 and decrease of 4.1% in comparison with the figure in the same quarter a year ago.
