In regional terms, ten places recorded negative rates, highlighted by the steepest declines reported in Amazonas (6.7%), Pernambuco (3.9%) Northeast Region (2.3%), Bahia (1.4%), Rio de Janeiro (0.8%), Minas Gerais (0.7%) and São Paulo (0.7%). Pará (-2.2%) and Goiás (-1.1%) registered the main advances in May 2016.

In May 2016 (21 days), there was one working day more than in the same month last year (20). In this month, the steepest decline was recorded in Espírito Santo (-18.9%) and Paraná (-11.0%), due to the reduced manufacture in the mining and quarrying sectors (pelletized iron ore), in the former place; and coke, petroleum products and biofuels (fuel oil, diesel fuel, ethyl alcohol and motor gasoline), in the latter.

Goiás (-8.5%) also recorded significantly negative figures compared with the national average (-7.8%), besides Rio de Janeiro (-7.6%), Minas Gerais (-7.2%), Amazonas (-6.3%), Santa Catarina (-6.2%), São Paulo (-5.8%), Pernambuco (-3.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (-3.6%), Bahia (-2.9%) and Ceará (-2.3%).

Mato Grosso (14.6%) and Pará (7.8%) registered the most intense advances in May 2016, influenced by the positive behaviour coming from the sector of food products (fresh and cooled beef, crude soybean oil and cake, bagasse, bran and other reside of soybean oil extraction) and coke, petroleum products and biofuels (ethyl alcohol), in the former place; and minning and quarrying industries (raw iron ore), in the latter. The Northeast Region had a slight increase of 0.3% and completed the group of areas with positive rates in May.

In the cumulative of the year, industry declined in 12 out of the 15 areas

In the cumulative indicator in the January-May 2016 period, against the same period last year, the reduction of overall production reached 12 out of the 15 areas surveyed, three of them with declines below the national average (-9.8%): Espírito Santo (-21.6%), Amazonas (-18,8%) and Pernambuco (-18.7%).

Pará (9.6%), Mato Grosso (7.4%) and Bahia (1.2%) recorded advances in terms of the cumulative index in the year, pinfluenced by the positive behaviour of mining and quarrying industries (raw iron ore), in the first sector; food products (fresh and cooled beef, crude soybean oil and cakes, bran, and other residue of soybean oil extraction), in the second; and coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel fuel and motor gasoline) and basic metals (bars, profiles and copper wires and copper alloys), in the third one.
