From this edition on, the Monthly Survey of Services will include seasonally adjusted indicators, as well as the time series, started in January 2012. In May 2016, the volume of the services sector fell -0.1% in relation to April, in the seasonally adjusted series, after a drop (-1.6%) in April and a 1.2% increase in March.  In the non-adjusted series, there was decrease (-6.1%) in relation to May 2015 - the sharpest one since November 2015 (-6.4%). The cumulative rates in the year (-5.1%) and in 12 months (-4.8%) also fell. In the same adjusted series, there were highs in the segments of Professional, administrative and complementary services (0.7%), Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities (0.5%) and Other services (1.2%). Conversely, Information and communication services fell (-0.2%) and Services rendered to families held steady (0.0%). The special aggregate of Tourism activities grew 0.4% in May, in the comparison with April. In the adjusted series, the nominal revenue in May grew 0.4% in relation to April, whereas the unadjusted change in relation to May 2015, decreased (-0.7%). The contributions of the segment to the volume rate without seasonal adjustment were: Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities (-2.9 pp); Professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.5 pp); Information and communication services (-1.0 pp); Services rendered to families (-0.4 pp) and Other services (-0.3 pp).

RESULTS BY SECTOR

Services rendered to families: in May, there was stability (0.0%) in the volume of services in relation to April, in the seasonally adjusted series, against stability in April and decrease (-6.1%) in March. There were drops in Lodging and food services (-2.8%) and in Other services rendered to families (-4.3%). In relation to May 2015, there was decrease (-7.0%), with cumulative drops in the year (-3.9%) and in 12 months (-4.8%) (Tables 1 and 1A).

Information and communication services: in May, in relation to April, the decrease
(-0.2%) in the volume of services was the same as in April, against a growth of 0.6% in March. Information and communication technology services – ICT grew 0.4%, although Telecommunications, (-0.2%) and Information technology services fell (-1.2%). The volume of Audiovisual, publishing and news agency services grew 1.3%, over the previous month.

In relation to May 2015, in the series without seasonal adjustment, there was a drop (-2.6%) in the volume of services, with decrease in April (-3.0%) and March (-5.9%). The cumulative change in the year stayed at -3.7% and, in 12 months, at -2.3% (Tables 1 and 1A)

Professional, administrative and complementary services: there was growth of 0.7% in May, in relation to April, against decreases in April (-2.6%) and in March (-0.5%). The volume of Technical-professional services grew 2.7% and of Administrative and complementary services changed 0.1%.

In relation to May 2015, in the series without seasonal adjustment, the segment fell
(-7.8%), with decrease in April (-5.4%) and March (-6.8%). There were also drops in the cumulative indexes in the year (-6.7%) and in the 12 months (-6.2%) (Tables 1 and 1A).    

Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities:  growth of 0.5% in May over contraction (-1.5%) in April and a high of 0.1% in March, in the adjusted series. By modes, the changes of volume in relation to the previous month were: Land transportation, (-0.7%), waterway transportation (1.7%) and air transportation (6.2%). The activity of Storage services, support activities for transportation and mailing activities registered a growth of 0.7%.

In the series without seasonal adjustment, the volume of the segment fell (-9.1%), in May in relation to the same month a year ago. The decrease was the same (-7.2%) both April and March (Tables 1 and 1A). The cumulative changes in the year and in 12 months stayed at -6.4%.

Other services: high of 1.2% in the volume of services rendered in May, compared with April, after contraction (-5.3%) in April, and growth of 6.9% in March (Tables 1 and 1A).

In the non-adjusted series, against the same month of 2015, there were decreases in May (-6.2%) and April (-3.3%), and a rise of 2.5% in March. The cumulative rates in the year (-4.2%) and in 12 months (-7.8%) also fell.

Tourism activities: growth of 0.4%, after two months of drops (-1.2% in April and -2.6% in March) in the seasonally adjusted series. Such growth can be attributable to the cold temperature in the South, which led to a greater demand for tourism in the Region.    

In relation to the same month of 2015, tourism activities dropped (-8.9%), following the decreases (-3.6%) of April and (-2.3%) March. The cumulative rate in the year
(-2.6%) and in 12 months (-2.1%) also fell.

RESULTS BY REGION

Services sector: As to regional results, seasonally adjusted, of the services sector in May, the biggest positive changes were recorded in Acre (3.9%), Pará (2.1%) and Ceará (1.5%). The greatest negative changes were in Paraíba (-2.5%), Federal District (-2.2%) and Mato Grosso (-1.9%).

As to the non-adjusted results, in the comparison with the same month of the previous year, just two Federation Units presented positive changes: Ceará (1.5%) and Tocantins (0.8%). The greatest negative changes were in Amapá (-17.1%), Bahia (-12.7%) and Paraíba (-12.6%). 

Tourism activities: in the seasonally adjusted series, the volume increased in Rio Grande do Sul (5.7%), Santa Catarina (1.4%), Paraná (1.3%), Ceará (0.9%) and Espírito Santo (0.8%). There were drops in São Paulo (-6.3%), Bahia (-4.1%), Pernambuco (-2.5%), Minas Gerais (-0.8%), Rio de Janeiro (-0.5%), Goiás (-0.3%) and the Federal District (-0.1%).

In relation to May 2015, there were decrease in all selected  Federation Units: Bahia (-18.6%), Federal District (-11.5%), Minas Gerais (-10.8%), Santa Catarina (-10.4%), Paraná (-9.6%), Espírito Santo e São Paulo (-8.8%, both), Goiás (-7.6%), Rio de Janeiro (-7.1%), Ceará (-6.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (-4.9%) and Pernambuco (-2.0%).
