Volume of services drops 6.3% in November
Concerning the regional results, the greatest positive changes in volume over July came from Rio de Janeiro(2.7%), Ceará (2.1%) and Rio Grande do Sul (1.4%). The highest negative changes occurred in Rondônia (-14.3%), Espírito Santo (-6.2%) and Mato Grosso (-6.1%).
In the comparison with the same month a year ago, all Federation Units recorded negative changes, but the greatest ones were seen in Rondônia (-21.2%), Amazonas (-16.1%) and Espírito Santo (-13.9%).
The Olympic Games held in August in Rio de Janeiro exerted an impact on the services sector, mostly clearly assessed in the regional perspective. The volume results for Rio de Janeiro in the seasonally adjusted series point to a growth of 2.7% in August, over the previous month, against drops of 1.7% in July and of 0.9% in June.
Tourism activities in Rio de Janeiro grow 1.7% in August
In relation to tourism activities, by selected Federation Units, the changes were positive for Santa Catarina (2.4%), Rio de Janeiro (1.7%) and Rio Grande do Sul (1.4%). The negative changes were seen in Espírito Santo (-8.7%), Federal District (-7.2%), São Paulo (-6.7%), Paraná (-3.8%), Bahia (-3.5%), Pernambuco (-2.4%), Minas Gerais (-2.0%), Ceará (-1.5%) and Goiás (-1.1%).
In the comparison with the same month a year ago, all selected Federation Units presented negative changes: Federal District (-20.3%), Espírito Santo (-19.1%), Bahia (-18.1%), Minas Gerais (-15.4%), Ceará and Paraná (both with -11.2%), Pernambuco (-6.9%), São Paulo (-6.5%), Goiás (-2.2%), Rio de Janeiro (-1.0%), Santa Catarina (-0.9%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-0.9%).
The impact of the Olympics in the tourism activities in Rio de Janeiro can be observed in the growth of 1.7% in August and of 0.6% in July, against a drop of 0.9% in June. The results of the nominal revenue show a growth of 7.3% over July, in the seasonally adjusted series, and a growth of 25.6% in the tourism activities. The differences seen between the indexes of nominal revenue and volume for tourism activities show a quite sharp rise of the prices practiced in the sector that comprises this special aggregate.
As to the unadjusted results, the impact of the event becomes even more evident in the housing and food services, which grew 15.6% in terms of volume in the comparison with August 2015 and 42.6%, in terms of the nominal revenue. In the tourism activities, although the nominal revenue grew 27.0%, the volume change was negative (-1.0%), due to the already mentioned price rise that affects this special aggregate.
