IPCA stays at 0.79% in June

The Extended National Consumer Price Index - IPCA changed 0.79% in June and stood above the rate registered in May (0.74%). Considering this figure, the first semester of the year closed at 6.17%, well above the rate of 3.75% in the first semester of 2014 and registering the highest rate for the January-June period since 2003 (6.64%). The cumulative rate in the last 12 months hit 8.89%, more than in the immediately previous 12 months (8.47%) and recording the highest cumulative index in 12 months since December 2003 (9.30%). The IPCA had posted the rate of 0.40% in June 2014.

As shown in the table below, Personal Expenses (1.63%) led the group changes. Having changed 30.80%, games of chance exerted the main individual impact on the index in this group (0.12 percentage points in June). The increase was 47.50% if we consider the months of May and June, reflecting the adjustments in the bets in force since May 18. As an important expenditure in the budget of families, the item domestic workers also stood out in this group (0.66%).

Airfare ranked in the second position in the list of main influences, exerting an impact of 0.10 p.p. Characterized by unstable results due to a number of factors, this item registered a cumulative drop of 32.71% in the semester, though it has risen 29.19% in June.

Pressed by airfare, the group of Transportation changed 0.70%, also influenced by services like car repair (1.70%), acquisition of used cars (0.78%) and urban bus fares (0.40%). Concerning the fares, this result reflected part of the adjustment of 12.50% in force since May 16 in the metropolitan area of Belém (6.72%).

Water and sewage fees (4.95%) was the third highest impact on the IPCA in June (0.07 p.p.), reflecting adjustments that took place in the following localities:

If we add the changes in items with significant weights like cleaning products (1.52%), condominium fees (0.92%) and residential rent (0.66%), the group of Housing closed June at 0.86%.

The three items with the highest individual influences - games of chance (30.80%), airfare (29.19%) and water and sewage fees (4.95%) - added up to 0.29 p.p. and were responsible for about one third of the June´s IPCA.

Health and Personal Care stayed at 0.91%, still influenced by medicines, which changed 0.64% in June and recorded a cumulative rate of 6.03% in the year. This increase reflected the adjustments of 5.00%, 6.35% or 7.70%, according to the concentration level in the market, in force since March 31. Other items stood out in this group:

Laboratory and hospital services 0.70%

 

TV, Stereo and Computer devices rose 0.84% and stood out in Household Articles, which changed 0.72%, whereas men’s wearing apparel (1.13%) highlighted in Wearing Apparel (0.58%).

The group of Food and Beverages changed 0.63%, led by onions (23.78%). See table below.

Among the IPCA groups, the lowest figure was registered by Education (0.20%), followed by Communication (0.34%).

The highest regional index was reported in Brasília (1.05%), due to the rise of 25.50% in airfare, whose weight of 1.57% produced an impact of 0.40 p.p. The lowest index was recorded in Goiânia (0.21%), where the price of the liter of gasoline became 2.30% cheaper, while ethanol dropped 8.53% (see table below).

The IPCA has been calculated by IBGE since 1980. It refers to families with monthly income of one to 40 minimum wages, whatever the source, and it encompasses ten metropolitan areas in Brazil, besides the municipalities of Goiânia, Campo Grande and Brasília.

In order to estimate the index of the month, the prices collected from May 28 to June 29, 2015 (reference) were compared with the prices in force from April 30 to May 27, 2015 (base).

In June, INPC stays at 0.77%

The National Consumer Price Index - INPC changed 0.77% in June, well below the figure of 0.99% in May. As a result, the first semester of the year closed at 6.80%, above the rate of 3.79% relative to the first semester of 2014. Considering the last 12 months, the index stayed at 9.31%, above that of the 12 previous months (8.76%). In June 2014, the INPC was 0.26%.

Food products changed 0.69% in June, whereas the rate was 1.48% in May. The group of non-food products changed 0.81% in June, above the rate of 0.78% in May.

Among the regional indexes, the highest index was posted in the metropolitan area of Salvador (0.97%), were food products rose 1.40%, well above the national average (0.69%), as well as water and sewage fees (7.29%), which reflected the adjustment of 9.98% in force since June 6. The lowest index was reported in Vitória (0.22%), due to the drop of 0.11% in the prices of food products. The next table shows the monthly figures by area surveyed.
