Continuous PNAD: unemployment reaches 8.1% in the quarter ended May 2015

The unemployment rate for the quarterly moving period ended May 2015 was estimated at 8.1% (Brazil), being above the rate of the equivalent quarter a year before (7.0%), and surpassing the figure in the quarter ended February 2015 (7.4%). The average usual real earning from all activities (R$ 1,863) remained stable versus that in the quarter ended February 2015 (R$ 1,877) and versus that in the same quarter a year before (R$ 1,870). The usual real wage bill of the employed population for the quarter ended May (R$ 166.1 billion) did not record any statistically significant change in either period of comparison. The Continuous PNAD indicators are obtained from data on quarterly moving periods, which means that data relative to the last three months are used in the survey. The rate for the quarter ended May 2015 was calculated according to information collected in March/2015, April/2015 and May/2015. The information used in the calculation of indicators for quarterly moving periods ended May and April, for instance, present a percentage of data repetition around 66%. In the quarter ended May 2015 there were about 8.2 million unemployed persons. This estimate was 7.4 million in the quarter December-February 2015, pointing to increase of 10.2% (756 thousand persons more). In comparison with the same quarter last year, this estimate rose 18.4% (by 1.3 million persons).

The number of employed persons was estimated at 92.1 million, without any statistically significant change versus the quarter December-February or the same quarter in 2014.

By employment type, compared with the quarter December-February 2015, the real earnings of persons employed in the public sector (including military and civil servants) recorded decrease of 2.2%: the same occurred to self-employed workers (-3.5%). In comparison with the quarter March-May 2014, only self-employed workers faced real losses in earnings (-3.5%).
