Industrial output drops in 11 of 14 places surveyed in October

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the reduced pace in the national industrial output between September and October 2016 was followed by 11 out of the 14 places surveyed, highlighted by the deepest drops in Minas Gerais (-7.6%) and Pará (-4.2%). Goiás (-3.0%), Amazonas (-2.5%), São Paulo (-2.4%), Santa Catarina (-2.1%) and the Northeast Region (-1.2%) also retreated above the industry average (-1.1%), whereas Rio Grande do Sul (-1.0%), Espírito Santo (-0.6%), Ceará (-0.3%) and Bahia (-0.3%) were the other places that registered negative indexes. Having expanded 3.4%, Rio de Janeiro recorded the sharpest positive figure this month. The other positive rates were reported by Paraná (2.7%) and Pernambuco (1.5%).

Still concerning the seasonally-adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the overall industry dropped 1.5% in the quarter ended in October 2016 against the previous month, accelerating the pace of loss in relation to August (-0.7%) and September (-1.1%). In regional terms, nine places registered negative rates, highlighted by the steeper declines recorded in Goiás (-4.0%), Minas Gerais (-3.1%), Amazonas (-2.7%), São Paulo (-2.1%), Ceará (-2.0%) and Paraná (-1.9%). On the other hand, Bahia (2.4%) posted the major expansion in October 2016.

In the comparison with the same month in the previous year, the industrial sector reduced 7.3% in October 2016, showing negative figures in 13 out of the 15 places surveyed. In October, the most intense retreats were reported in Mato Grosso (-21.6%), Espírito Santo (-15.4%), Goiás (-13.7%) and Minas Gerais (-11.1%). Amazonas (-8.6%), Ceará (-7.5%) and Bahia (-7.4%) also registered higher negative results than the national average (-7.3%), whereas São Paulo (-6.5%), Santa Catarina (-4.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (-4.4%), the Northeast Region (-2.6%), Paraná (-2.2%) and Pernambuco (-0.7%) were the other places that recorded negative rates in October. Conversely, Rio de Janeiro (5.7%) and Pará (2.4%) posted advances in October 2016.

In the cumulative indicator for the January-October 2016 period, against the same period last year, the reduction in the national output reached 14 out of the 15 places surveyed, four of them declining more than the national average (-7.7%): Espírito Santo (-21.6%), Amazonas (-13.2%), Pernambuco (-11.3%) and Goiás (-8.2%). Minas Gerais (-7.4%), São Paulo (-6.2%), Paraná (-6.2%), Rio de Janeiro (-5.4%), Ceará (-4.9%), Bahia (-4.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (-4.6%), Santa Catarina (-4.2%), the Northeast Region (-3.4%) and Mato Grosso (-1.2%) were the other places that posted negative figures at the end of the tenth month of the year. On the other hand, Pará (9.3%) registered the only advance in the cumulative index in the year.

Having retreated 8.4% in October 2016 for the overall industry, the annualized rate – cumulative indicator in the last 12 months – reduced the pace of decline against that recorded in June (-9.7%), July (-9.5%), August (-9.3%) and September (-8.8%). In regional terms, 13 out of the 15 places surveyed recorded negative rates in October 2016, yet ten of showed higher dynamism against the index of last September. The major gains between September and October were posted in Rio de Janeiro (from -7.8% to -6.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (from -7.1% to -5.9%), Amazonas (from -16.4% to -15.3%), Paraná (from -8.6% to -7.6%), Santa Catarina (from -5.6% to -4.9%) and São Paulo (from -8.0% to -7.3%), whereas Mato Grosso (from 2.2% to 0.1%), Espírito Santo (from -20.2% to -21.2%) and Goiás (from -6.8% to -7.7%) reported the major losses between the two periods.
