Continuous PNAD: unemployment reaches 8.0% in quarter ended in April 2015

The unemployment rate in the moving quarter ended in April 2015 was estimated at 8.0% for Brazil, staying above the rate of the same quarter in the previous year (7.1%) and also surpassing that of the quarter ended in January 2015 (6.8%). The average usual real earnings from all jobs (R$ 1,855) remained stable against the November-January 2015 quarter (R$ 1,864) and in relation to the same quarter last year (R$ 1,862). The usual real wage bill received from all jobs for the quarter ended in April (R$ 165.5 billion) did not also show any statistically-significant variation in both periods of comparison. The indicators of the Continuous PNAD are calculated for moving quarters, using the information of the last three consecutive months of the survey. The rate of the moving quarter ended in April 2015 was computed from the information collected in February 2015, March 2015 and April 2015. The information used for the calculation of the indicators for the moving quarters ended in April and March, for example, has an amount of repetition of data around 66%. This repetition only ceases to exist after an interval of two moving quarters. 8.0 million persons were unemployed in the quarter ended in April. That figure was 6,8 million in the quarter from November to January 2015, recording a rise of 18.7% (more 1.3 million persons). Compared with the same quarter a year ago, this estimate increased 14.0% (more 985 thousand persons).

The number of employed persons was estimated at 92.2 million. This contingent was reduced by 511 thousand persons (-0.6%) in the comparison with the quarter from November to January 2015. Compared with the same quarter a year ago, this estimate increased 0.7% (more 629 thousand persons).
