May 24, 2016 09h38 AM | Last Updated: June 02, 2017 12h50 PM

The Annual Survey of Industry – PIA Enterprise unveiled 334.8 thousand enterprises in 2014 in the sectors of mining and manufacturing industries, employing 8.8 million persons and with a net sales revenue of R$2.8 trillion, an average of R$8.4 million per enterprise. The expenditures with personnel reached R$416.8 billion, whereas the investments added up to R$216.3 billion. The gross value of production – all sales of industrial products and services – and the intermediate consumption – all costs of industrial operations – registered R$2.7 trillion and R$1.9 trillion, respectively. As a result, the value added hit R$783.1 billion.

The gross value added was R$1.1 trillion, obtained from the subtraction of the costs of industrial operations (R$1.4 trillion) from the gross value of industrial production (R$2.5 trillion). The three sectors that led the ranking of contribution to the gross value added were manufacture of food products (15.3%), manufacture of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (9.4%) and manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (7.3%). The total net revenue of industrial enterprises (R$2.8 trillion) was led by companies employing 500 or more persons, which remained as the greatest contributors to the Brazilian industry (67.7%), a percentage lower than that reported in 2013 (68.5%). Companies from other personnel brackets relatively increased their participation in the overall result.

Consumption of raw materials accounts for 40.5% of overall costs

In 2014, total costs and expenditures of industrial enterprises were of about R$3.0 trillion. Expenses with personnel reached 13.9% of the total, a contribution similar to that of 2013 (14.0%). The expenditure with the consumption of raw materials accounted for 40.5% of the total, remaining as the biggest percentage in the structure of costs and expenses in the year, even though inferior to the one seen in 2013 (41.6%).

The cost of resale goods recorded a lower participation compared with that in the previous year: 6.7% in 2014 against 7.2% in 2013. The consumption of fuels and the acquisition of electricity added up to R$69.2 billion in 2014, representing 2.3% of the total, whereas payment for services provided by third parties and miscellaneous consumption for repair and maintenance of machinery and equipment hit R$ 95.5 billion, representing 3.2% of the total. Both categories maintained the same percentage as in 2013.

In the other costs and expenses, which added up to 33.4% of the total, depreciation, amortization and exhaustion of fixed assets stayed at 3.6%, expenses destined to payment of royalties and technical assistance, at 1.3%, and marketing expenses, at 0.9%. Other costs and expenditures represented 27.6% in 2014, above that reported in 2013.

Having paid R$2.1 trillion in costs and expenditures – which corresponded to 70.2% of the total – in 2014, companies employing 500 or more persons remained as the greatest contributors to the total costs and expenditures in industry, remaining stable in relation to 2013 (70.5%).

Total investments in industrial enterprises hit R$216.2 billion

Total investments in industrial enterprises hit R$216.2 billion in 2014, being R$209.8 billion invested by companies employing 30 or more persons and R$6.5 billion (3.0%) by companies employing up to 29 persons. Concerning the investments in companies employing 30 or more persons, industrial machinery and equipment stood out, as in 2013, adding up to R$91.6 billion. This sector maintained the biggest participation in the total investments, though dropping the participation from 43.3% in 2013 to 42.3% in 2014. Acquisition of land and real estate reduced from 15.7% in 2013 to 13.6% in 2014.

Resources invested in transportation means represented 3.1% of the total invested by industrial companies in 2014, whereas other acquisitions (furniture, desktop computers, etc.) accounted for 37.9%.

Manufacture of food products (15.3%) is the greatest contributor for sector

In 2014, the activities that mostly contributed to the Brazilian industrial gross value added (R$1.1 trillion) in the mining and quarrying and manufacturing industries were: manufacture of food products (15.3%); manufacture of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (9.4%); manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (7.3%); manufacture of chemicals (6.9%); extraction of petroleum and natural gas (5.9%); extraction of metallic minerals (5.6%); basic metal (4.8%); manufacture of machinery and equipment (4.8%); manufacture of non-metallic mineral products (3.7%) and manufacture of rubber and plastic products (3.7%). Together, these sectors concentrated 67.4% of the overall industry in 2014. The sector of extraction of metallic minerals reduced its participation, changing from the fourth position in 2013 to the sixth position in 2014, whereas the sector of manufacture of chemicals changed from the fifth position in 2013 to the fourth position in 2014. Extraction of petroleum and natural gas rose one position, ranking in the fifth position in 2014.
