Services sector shrinks (-4.5%) in April

The volume of the services sector declined (-4.5%) in April in relation to April 2015. March (-5.9%) and February (-3.9%) also registered drops in this comparison. All the segments of this sector recorded negative changes: Services rendered to families (-3.0%); Information and communication services (-3.0%); Professional, administrative and complementary services (-5.4%); Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (-6.5%) and Other services (-3.3%). The cumulative rate in the year stood at -4.9% and, in 12 months, at -4.6%. The special aggregate of Tourism activities retreated (-3.6%), after also declining in March (-2.3%) and rising in February (1.3%). Click here to see the complete publication.

In this same comparison, nominal revenue rose 0.4% in April in relation to April 2015, after retreating (-0.4%) in March and increasing 2.0% in February. The cumulative rate of nominal revenue in the year reached 0.5% and, in 12 months, 0.6% (Tables 1A).

The contributions to the overall rate of volume were: Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (-2.0 p.p.), Information and communication services (-1.1 p.p.), Professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.0 p.p.), Services rendered to families and Other services (-0.2 p.p. both) (Table 2).

RESULTS BY SECTOR

Services rendered to families dropped (-3.0%) in terms of volume of services in April over the same month in the previous year, against -3.8% in March and -1.4% in February, maintaining the constant series of negative volume changes since May 2014. The cumulative change in the year stood at -3.1% and, in 12 months, at -5.0%. Housing and food services fell 3.1% and Other services rendered to families, 2.5%.

Information and communication services dropped (-3.0%) in terms of volume of services in April over the same month in 2015, having negatively changed also in March (-5.9%) and February (-5.1%). The cumulative rate in the year stood at -4.0% and, in 12 months, at -2.1%. The volume of Information and communication technology services – ICT declined (-2.4%), highlighted by Telecommunications (-3.5%). Information technology services increased (1.6%) and Audiovisual, publishing and news agency services retreated (-6.8%).

Professional, administrative and complementary services dropped (-5.4%) in April in relation to the same month a year ago, having also decreased in March (-6.8%) and February (-4.3%). The cumulative volume change in the year stood at -6.4% and, in 12 months, at -5.8%. The volume of Technical-professional services, which encompass knowledge-intensive services, declined (-6.3%), as well as Administrative and complementary services (-5.1%), which encompass labor-intensive services.      

Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing dropped (-6.5%) in April over the same month last year. This segment also retreated in March (-7.2%) and February (-2.1%). The cumulative volume change in the year stood at -5.5% and, in 12 months, at -6.1%. As to the mode, the results were: Land transportation (-8.8%), Water transportation (-2.9%), Air transportation (-0.1%) and Storage services, support activities for transportation and mailing activities (-4.7%).

Other services dropped (-3.3%) in terms of volume, after increasing 2.5% in March and falling (-6.1%) in February.  The cumulative rate in the year stood at -3.6% and, in 12 months, at -7.9%.

Tourism activities dropped (-3.6%) in April when compared with April 2015, having retreated (-2.3%) in March and increased (1.3%) in February. The cumulative change in the year stood at -1.0% and, in 12 months, at -1.6%.

RESULTS BY REGION

The biggest changes in April compared with the same month in the previous year were: Rondônia (7.2%), Tocantins and Roraima, both with 6.5%. The most negative volume changes were: Amazonas (-15.3%), Amapá (-12.3%) and Paraíba (-11.2%).

Tourism activities

The analysis of the Tourism activities according to the selected Federation Units showed that the biggest volume changes were in Pernambuco (4.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.5%).

The smallest volume changes were in Santa Catarina (-12.8%), Paraná (-12.6%), Bahia (-11.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (-9.7%), Goiás (-5.8%), Espírito Santo (-5.6%), Ceará (-4.8%), Minas Gerais (-3.9%), São Paulo (-2.2%) and the Federal District (-1.6%).
