Production of eggs, and slaughter of chickens and of hogs and pigs hit record figures in 2016

Livestock in the country hit three record figures in 2016: the production of hen's eggs increased 5.8% and reached 3.1 billion dozens. The slaughter of chicken increased 1.1% and amounted to 5.86 billion head and the slaughter of hogs and pigs was 7.8% up, reaching 1.4%. Cattle slaughter, on the contrary, fell by 3.2% versus the 2015 figure, on a downward trend observed since 2014, and the production of milk fell 3.7%, having recorded decrease for the second year in a row. The survey also presents details of these products in the fourth quarter of 2015, versus the previous quarter and the same quarter in 2015.

Cattle slaughter 3.2% down
In 2016 a total 29.67 million cattle head were under some kind of sanitary inspection. There was a decrease of 3.2% in comparison with 2015 figures, with minus 982.83 thousand head slughtered. That was the third annual decrease in a row in the time series of cattle slaughter.
Slaughter recorded decrease in 20 of the 27 Federation Units. The most significant decreases were those of Minas Gerais (-370.94 thousand units), São Paulo (-260.16 Thousand head), Goiás (-239,.48 thousand head), Mato Grosso do Sul (-116.46 thousand head) and Bahia (-78.4 thousand head). Among the states, the biggest increases came fom Rondônia (+250.49 thousand head), Pará (+83.64 thousand head), Rio Grande do Sul (+76.04 thousand head) and Mato Grosso (+36.65 thousand head), which remained as the leader in the rankingof Federation Units in 2016, with 15.4% of national participation, followed by twp neighboring states in the Central West: Mato Grosso do Sul (11.1%) and Goiás (9.5%).
In Q4 2016 a total 7.41 million cattle head were slaughtered, with a hike of 1.2% versus the previous quarter and decrease of 3.7% versus Q4 2015.
Slaughter of hogs and pigs increases 7.8% and hits record figure again
In 2016, a total 42.32 million cattle head were slaughtered, with an increase of 7.8% in relation to 2015. It is a new record of the time series which started in 1997 showing continuous anual increase of this activity from 2005 on.
The slaughter of hogs and pigs surpassed the 2015 figure by 3.05 million head. Slaughter increased in 17 of the 25 Federation Units taking part in the survey and in all the Federation Units with participation above 1%: Paraná (+1.16 million head), Santa Catarina (+450.87 thousand head), Rio Grande do Sul (+429.08 thousand head), Mato Grosso (+336.94 thousand head), São Paulo (+211.42 thousand head), Minas Gerais (+205.78 thousand head), Mato Grosso do Sul (+85.58 thousand head) and Goiás (+65.01 thousand head).
Santa Catarina remained as the leader in terms of slaughte of hogs and pigs, with 25.4% of the national total, followed by Paraná (21.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (19.7%).
In Q4 2016, a total 10.81 million head of hogs and pigs were slaughtered. There were increases of 0.8% in relation to the previous quarter and of 5.8% in relation to the same period of 2015. This quarterly result was the highest since 1997.
Slaughter of chickens increases 1.1% and hits new record
In 2016, a total 5.86 billion head of chickens were slaughtered, with increase of 1.1% in relation to 2015, or 64.09 million head more. It is a record of the time series which started in 1997.
There were no hikes in slaughter in 10 of the 25 Federation Units participating in the survey. The main increases came from Paraná (+58.10 million head), Rio Grande do Sul (+31.88 million head), in Minas Gerais (+20.02 milllion head), in Bahia (+2.11 million head) and in Mato Grosso (+252.82 thousand head). Paraná remained as the leader in terms of chicken slaughter in 2016, with 31.3% of national participation, followed by Santa Catarina (14.9%) and Rio Grande do Sul (14.2%). The most significant decreases were those of Goiás (-15.56 million head), Santa Catarina (-11.17 million head), Federal District (-6.49 million head), Mato Grosso do Sul (-5,.0 million head) and São Paulo (-175.82 thousand head).
In Q4 2016, a total 1.41 billion head of chickens were slaughtered. There were decreases of % em relação ao trimestre imediatamente anterior e de 6,2% na comparação com o mesmo período de 2015.
Acquisition of milk is 3.7% down and records second annual decrease in a row
In 2016, milk and dairy establishments under some kind of sanitary inspection produced 23.17 billlion liters of milk. There was a decrease of 3.7% in comparison with the previous year, which means a decrease by 893.23 milllion liters. This is the 2nd conscutive decrease in the time series of anual milk acquisition.
There were decreases in 17 of the 26 Federation Units particpating in the survey. The most significant decreases were those of Minas Gerais (-335.94 million liters), Rio Grande do Sul (-238.7 milllion liters), Goiás (-136.2 million liters) and Paraná (-94.23 million liters).
The biggest increases were recorded by Santa Catarina (+89.77 million liters), Rio de Janeiro (+18.7 million liters), Pará (+15.95 million liters) e Tocantins (+15.6 million liters). Minas Gerais remained as the leader in the ranking of Federation Units, with 26.4%of national participatiom, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (14.0%) and Paraná (11.8%).
In Q4 2016, the amount of milk acquired totaled 6.24 billion liters, with na increase of 6.7% over the previous quarter and of 0.8% versus Q4 2015.
Acquisition of milk increases 1.4%
In 2016, the tanneries investigated by the Quarterly Survey of Leather Production reported having received 33.62 million pieces of rawhide, na amount 1.4% bigger than in the previous year, which repesents 478.4 Thousand pieces more.
There was na increase of the amount of cattle rawhide received, in 15 of the s 21 Federation Units included in the survey. Accounting for the main changes were the states of Maranhão (+648.31 thousand pieces), Bahia (+351.55 thousand pieces), Paraná (+343.18 thousand pieces) and Rondônia (+304.43 thousand pieces).
The most significant decreases took place in Goiás (-248.24 mil peças), Pará (-217.58 thousand pieces) and Mato Grosso (-173.49 thousand pieces) which, however, remained in the leadership of rawhide acquisition, with 16.4% of participation in the national overall, followed by Mato Grosso do Sul (12.9%) and São Paulo (10.9%).
In Q4 2016, the surveyed tanneries received 8.25 million pieces of cattle rawhide, with decreases of 1.0% in relation to the previous quarter and of 2.1% in relation to Q4 2015.
Production of hen's eggs hits record figure: 3.10 million dozens
In 2016 a total 3.10 billion dozens of hen's eggs were produced, with increase of 5.8% in relation to 2015, that is 51.28 million dozens more. That was a new record in the series.
There were increases in 19 of the 26 Federation Units taking part in the survey. The biggest increases were recorded by São Paulo (+49.94 million dozens), Ceará (+28.95 million dozens), Espírito Santo (+19.35 million dozens), Goiás (+19.1 million dozens), Minas Gerais (+13.18 million dozens) and Tocantins (+10,06 million dozens). The most significant decreases took place in Amazonas (-4.31 million dozens) and Bahia (-1.52 million dozens). Accounting for 29.5% of the national production of hen's eggs, São Paulo remains as the leader, followed by Minas Gerais (9.8%) and Paraná (9.3%).
In Q4 2016, the production of hen's eggs reached 799.33 million dozens, a record quarterly result in the time series initiated in 1987. This figure was 2.5% bigger than in the previous quarter and 6.9% above that of Q4 2015.
