In a ceremony held on Friday night (29), the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) launched the medal commemorating its 90th anniversary, in partnership with the Brazilian Mint. The piece celebrates the institution's trajectory and its contribution to the production of geographic and statistical information about Brazil.

Produced in bronze and with a limited run of 330 units, the medal was developed especially to mark the Institute's anniversary, adopting the concept of aged bronze to represent its history.

The event, held in the gardens of Palácio do Catete, in Rio de Janeiro, was attended by the president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann and Marcone da Silva Leal, from the Brazilian Mint's commercial department. On that occasion, the symbolic act of decharacterization of the medal's original pair of stamps was carried out, a procedure that ensures the production limit and reinforces the historical and collectible value of the piece.

“It is a great pleasure to participate in the IBGE event and today we held a symbolic ceremony, but very important from a collecting point of view. For those who are collectors for the love of art and those who make a living from collecting, we try to immortalize these important moments through the medal. We are going to de-characterize the handle because it is what guarantees the uniqueness of one of these pieces and will give it the importance, relevance and value it will have in history,” explained him.

Then, the president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, gave the medal two hammer blows, as instructed by Marcone da Silva Leal. “It is a simple but secular act. It is very important for us, for collectors and for the IBGE,” told him.

The obverse, the main side of the medal, bears the 90th anniversary commemorative mark in high relief, accompanied by inscriptions with the name of the Institute, the year of creation (1936) and the year of celebration. Graphic elements composed of dots refer to data produced by the IBGE surveys, in addition to symbolizing digital transformation, modernization and innovation in the production of official information.

On the reverse, the medal features a world map with Brazil at the center of the representation, highlighting the IBGE's presence on the international scene. The composition uses the Equal Earth cartographic projection, created in 2018 and recognized for reducing distortions common in traditional cartographic representations.

Symbols linked to statistics and geosciences also make up the design of the piece, along with the slogan “90 years portraying Brazil.” The sentence refers to the IBGE's institutional mission of producing essential information for understanding the Brazilian reality.

The symbolic delivery of the medal commemorating the 90th anniversary of the IBGE, produced by the Brazilian Mint, was carried out in recognition of the partner institutions and people who contributed to carrying out the commemorative activities. Receiving the honor, Angela Moreira Carnaval, representing the Palácio da Fazenda and the Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services; Marconi da Silva Leal, on behalf of the Brazilian Mint; Lúcia Verônica de Oliveira Trindade, representing the Museum of the Republic; José Francisco Teixeira Carvalho, on behalf of the IBGE State Superintendency in Rio de Janeiro, where the medal will be symbolically displayed; and the group of artists, designers and other professionals involved in the conception and production of the medal.

“I am very happy to have contributed to the IBGE. The IBGE has been a great partner of our building [Palácio da Fazenda], it brought joy to knowledgeable people too,” thanked Angela Carnaval.

Lucia Veronica de Oliveira, from the Museum of the Republic, expressed gratitude for the honor. “May today be the beginning of a partnership between the IBGE, Museum of the Republic and IBRAM, a very close and beneficial partnership for everyone.”

Marcone da Silva Leal, from the Brazilian Mint, reinforced: “It is an immense happiness that we are participating in this event. The IBGE is such an important office for Brazil, as I said, because of the data, work and reports it generates, which are so important for establishing public policies in Brazil and for us to be able to move forward. The history of Brazil intersects with the history of institutions. So, the Brazilian Mint goes through this a lot. We participate in many events, games, some of which are also secular. It is a great honor for us to be here with you, sharing this moment, because I know that it is very important for you.”

The medal commemorating the IBGE's 90th anniversary is a collector's item and is part of the annual medal calendar of the Brazilian Mint. Those interested can purchase it through the Medal Club website, an e-commerce platform that brings together all the editions launched throughout the year. As the print run is limited, the recommendation is that collectors and the general public make purchases in advance, guaranteeing access to a piece that seeks to immortalize a relevant historical landmark for Brazil.

During the event, there were cultural presentations by the IBGE Choir, in addition to a samba performance by the official of the Division of Social Communication, Celso Pinto, accompanied by tambourine player Bira da Mangueira. The cultural group Dançarte Dance Company, coordinated by choreographer Natasha Meloni, daughter of official Alcides Braga, also performed in a ballet number. The closing ceremony featured a performance by the artist duo Igor Boneco and Therezinha Maria, as well as DJ Doni.
