Ombudsman in Action: IBGE debates ethics, health and integrity in public services in the 90th anniversary

As part of the celebrations for the 90th anniversary of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the Institute's Presidency is promoting, on May 7th, the event “Ombudsman in Action for the 90th anniversary of the IBGE,” which will bring together experts to debate the role of ombudsman offices in promoting integrity, democracy and human rights in the public service. The meeting takes place from 8:30 am, at Casa Brasil IBGE, in Rio de Janeiro downtown, with live broadcast on the Digital IBGE channel.

The initiative proposes a reflection on contemporary themes that are sensitive to public administration, such as ethics, harassment, mental health and the conduct of civil servants during the electoral period, highlighting the role of ombudsman offices as fundamental instruments of listening, mediation and institutional strengthening. The program includes lectures and debates with guests with recognized careers in the area of ​​public integrity and citizenship.

In events celebrating its 90th anniversary, the IBGE has reaffirmed its commitment to democracy, ethics and human rights, promoting qualified debate on integrity, mental health and citizenship in the public service. For the president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, “the initiative demonstrates the timeliness and relevance of the institution, not only in the production of information, but also in the construction of a more transparent, human and participatory public culture.”

Among the speakers is José Eduardo Elias Romão, ‑general coordinator of the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA), researcher and general ombudsman‑ for the Union between 2011 and 2014. With a career that began during his Law degree, in the transdisciplinary Citizenship Centers program at the UFMG, Romão built a career marked by a balance between research activities and public and corporate management, with activities focused on defending human rights and strengthening democracy. He opens the program with the lecture “Brazilian Ombudsman Offices: United in Integrity, Democracy and Human Rights.”

Also participating in the meeting is Davi Valdetaro Gomes Cavalieri, federal prosecutor, professor, speaker and author of the book Compliance and Mental Health in Organizations. Cavalieri is also a producer and presenter of podcasts focused on the theme of ethics in the public sector, such as On the Trail of Ethics and Ethics in Movement, and will address, in his presentation, the challenges of reconciling ethics, the electoral period, confronting harassment and mental health care in the institutional environment.

After the lectures, the debate session will feature the participation of IBGE officials Sheila Souza Fonseca and Ana Paula Gomes Tercio Argueso, who work in the IBGE Ombudsman's Office; by José Eduardo Elias Romão, general coordinator of the Institute of Applied Economic Research (IPEA); and federal prosecutor Davi Valdetaro Gomes Cavalieri.

The program begins with accreditation at 8:30 am, followed by the official opening at 9 am. After the lectures, the event will end with a debate between the participants. Those interested in attending the meeting in person must register by May 7th, via e‑email [email protected].
