What is the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on academic research? How does a people occupy territory and define its boundaries? What does statistics have to do with all this? These are some of the points that will be discussed next week in two opening lectures of the academic year for postgraduate studies at the National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE), IBGE's higher education institution.
The activities will take place in the ENCE auditorium and do not require registration. Students, researchers, staff, and interested individuals are welcome to participate.
Social organization and territory settlement
On Monday (03/02), the inaugural lecture will be offered by the Specialization program in Environmental Analysis and Territory Management, addressing the theme: “Territorializing in pursuit of a 'better life’': the pathways of the peoples of the Upper Negro River in different territorial situations”.
The lecture, given by Fernando Damasco, PhD in Geography from the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) and General-Coordinator of IBGE Census Operations, will tackle the ways of territory settlement and of social organizations of Indigenous peoples of the Brazilian Amazônia.
Changes in academic research with the emergence of AI
On the following day (03/03), the event will be marked by the master class of the Postgraduate Program in Population, Territory and Public Statistics (PPG). The theme “How generative artificial intelligence is (quickly) transforming academic research” will be presented by Rafael Cardoso Sampaio, from the Department of Political Sciences of the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), researcher from the INCT Participa and CNPq Research Productivity Fellow.
Interacting with the audience, the lecturer aims to address the impact of AI on researcher training and scientific and statistical evaluation.
