The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and the National Library Foundation, signed on Tuesday 23rd, by means of Brasiliana Fotográfica, a protocol of intentions for projects in partnership. The signing event took place at the Office of the President, at the FBN Headquarters, downtown Rio de Janeiro.

Brasiliana Fotográfica  is responsible for managing the photographic and iconographic collection of the National Library, as well as for preserving the digital collection. The main aim of the agreement signed on Tuesday is the sharing of photos, images, maps and data between the IBGE and the FBN.

The protocol marks the continuity of a cooperation that began in May this year, when a first document of intent for information sharing was signed. Flávia Vinhaes, the IBGE executive director, of behalf of President Marcio Pochmann at the ceremony, celebrated the agreement, appreciating the years of existence of the Institute and the changes in the dissemination of information and the methodologies used throughout the years. “If society changes, the IBGE also changes, and new updates and adaptations are needed, especially with the advance of technology,” said Vinhaes.

Daniel Castro, coordinator general of the Center for Information Documentation and Dissemination and Social Communication (CDDI CCS), emphasized that information, whether as photos, maps, images or data, represents the empowerment of people. “Dissemination represents not only the basis of how the country was made, but also the way in which information reaches places and people”, he said.

The president of the National Library Foundation, Marco Lucchesi, emphasized that the protocol of intent marks a commitment of reciprocity between the public bodies: “ For many months, I have wanted us to be able to have this meeting because, for me, the IBGE has a great love for this institution.”

“The IBGE is able to give to us, and to Brazil, as it does to Brasiliana Fotográfica, this republican coverage, in addition to the right to look, it is the right to having eyes”, Lucchesi concludes.

For Emerson Matosino Ferreira Dias, coordinator of the Customer Services (COATI CDDI), the partnership “will significantly increase the visibility of the photographic collections of the IBGE, as well as contribute to the generation of knowledge, thus contributing to the building of the memory of Brazil and Brazilians. These photographs, especially those that emerged from field expeditions, reveal Brazil from different perspectives, expressing the diversity of our country, including cultural diversity,” he said.
