IBGE discusses innovation in censuses in Meeting of Executive Committee of ECLAC´s Statistical Conference of the Americas

Marcio Pochmann, Preisndet of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), participated in the XXIII meetin of the Executive Committee of the Statistical Conference of the Americas (SCA) of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). Held in ECLAC´s headquarters in Santiago, Chile, the conference occurred on August 28-29.
Organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Latin-American and Caribbean Demographic Center, ECLAC´s Division of Statistics and Inter-American Development Bank, the meeting discussed the innovations to design new population censuses n the face of digital transformations.
Marcio Pochmann presented topic II: "Technical and methodological skills in a context of fast technological development," which presents the major challenges for strategic planning in the current social, political and economic context faced by Latin America and the Caribbean.
For Pochmann, the participation of the IBGE reflects "two intense days to plan for the period between 2026 and 2035. With heads of national statistical offices of Latin American and Caribbean countries, the presentation of experiences of thematic innovation and requirements for its accomplishment."
In the event, representatives of national statistical offices of Latin America and the Caribbean analyzed the progress of the program of statistical cooperation at regional and international level, as well as the progress of the Biennial Program of Activities of Regional and International Cooperation for 2024-2025.
SCA´s new Strategic Plan for 2026-2035 was also discussed, establishing the institutional strengthening and the leadership role of national statistics, as well as the development of human resources and statistical production and the regional and international cooperation for the development of official statistics.
Representing the IBGE, Denise Kronemberger participated on-line in the meeting and presented the theme "Report of the Interinstitutional and Experts Group on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Indicators." The SDGs were established by the United Nations (UN) in 2015 and comprise a worldwide agenda of 17 goals to design and implement public policies that approach key themes for human development up to 2030, in five perspectives: people, planet, prosperity, partnership and peace.
"To assess the progress of the SDGs, we have current challenges of availability and up-to-dateness of the data. In general terms, data internationally comparable for monitoring the SDGs have improved. 68% of the indicators have fair data coverage. However, there are gaps in priority areas for sustainable development, like gender equality (SDG 5), climate action (SDG 13) and peace, justice and efficient institutions (SDG 16), according to the UN Report for the SDGs, of 2024," explained Kronemberger in her presentation.

The SCA is a subsidiary office of ECLAC and the major forum to discuss the development of statistics.
Created in 2000, the SCA aims at contributing to the progress of statistical activities and policies in the countries of the region, as well as at fostering the international and regional cooperation between the national statistical offices and international and regional organizations.

On August 26, Pochmann also participated in the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), which discussed the inequality of the world population in an event held in the headquarters of the Council, in New York, United States.
"It is important to highlight the inviation of the Executive Committee of the United Nations Population Fund to the IBGE to present its vision concerning the new governance of the population. A discussion comprising representatives of many countries concerning the new population reality ongoing in the world," emphasized Marcio Pochmann.
About ECOSOC
The core of the discussions was the changing population path on the planet, as well as the updating and innovation of public policies towards population and demography. At the time, the IBGE presented the experience of the National System of Geosciences, Statistics and Data (SINGED).
Representatives of the United Nations Development (UNDP), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) participated in the event.
