Cattle, hogs and pigs, and chicken slaughter grow in second quarter of 2024

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released today (13) the first results of the Quarterly Surveys of Livestock. Cattle slaughter grew 17.2% compared with the second quarter of 2023, that of hogs and pigs increased 2.4% and that of chicken, 3.2%. Compared with the first quarter of 2024, cattle, hogs and pigs, and chicken slaughter rose 6.9%, 4.3% and 1.1%, respectively.

The preliminary data of the Statistics of Livestock Production showed that 9.94 million cattle head under some sort of sanitary inspection were slaughtered in the second quarter of 2024. Hogs and pigs slaughter added up to 14.55 million head. In addition, 1.61 billion chicken head were slaughtered.

2.57 million tonnes of cattle carcasses were registered, an increase of 17.0% in relation to the second quarter of 2023 and of 7.3% in relation to the first quarter of 2024.

The cumulative weight of hogs and pigs’ carcasses was of 1.34 million tonnes in the second quarter of 2024, an increase of 0.9% compared with the second quarter of 2023 and of 4.8% in relation to the first quarter of 2024. On the other hand, the cumulative weight of chicken carcasses was of 3.43 million tonnes, rising 2.1% in relation to the second quarter of 2023 and 1.9% over the first quarter of 2024. 

Acquisition of milk and leather

The survey showed that the acquisition of raw milk by establishments under some sort of sanitary inspection was of 5.81 billion liters in the second quarter of 2024. This value represents an increase of 0.4% compared with that recorded in the second quarter of 2023 and a reduction of 6.3% compared with the first quarter of 2024.

The tanneries in charge of at least 5,000 whole pieces of cattle rawhide per year reported to have received 10.08 million whole cattle rawhide pieces in the second quarter of 2024. That amount represents an increase of 17.0% compared with that recorded in the second quarter of 2023 and of 8.2% against the first quarter of 2024. 

Production of hen eggs

In the second quarter of 2024, 1.15 billion dozen of hen eggs were produced. That result represented an increase of 9.1% against the same period in 2023 and of 5.0% against the first quarter of 2024.

More about the survey

The survey investigates information on the number of slaughtered animals and the total weight of carcass, by species of cattle (oxen, cows, steers and heifers), hogs and pigs, and chicken, having as collection units’ establishments that slaughter animals under federal, state or municipal sanitary inspection.  The survey is released every quarter and data are presented every month for each quarter of the civil year.

As of the first quarter of 2018, in response to users’ needs for timely information on livestock, the IBGE started releasing "First Results" of the Quarterly Survey of Animal Slaughter for Brazil, as a provisional solution. These data are available nearly one month ahead the release of the "Complete Results.” The data can be accessed on Sidra. The next release of the complete results, related to the second quarter of 2024, will be on September 5.
