Representatives of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and the Superintendency for the Development of the Northeast (Sudene) gathered at the headquarters of the institute, in Rio de Janeiro, with the objective of intensifying the technical cooperation between the two agencies. The objective is to promote activities in partnership aiming at the construction and dissemination of data, among other projects of common interest for the interchange of information and practices that will lead to the improvement of public policies.

“This is an important initiative. The IBGE and Sudene are two institutions with agendas that interconnect concerning the development of the country and the reduction of inequalities by means of the availability of resources. That results in a better process of elaboration of public policies,” said Flavia Vinhaes, executive director of the IBGE.

Sudene formulates plans and directives for development of the Northeast Region and supports, on a complementary basis, public and private investments in the fields of social and economic infrastructure, training of human resources, technological innovation and dissemination, social and cultural policies. It is also a duty of the Entity to promote economic, social and cultural development, and to protect the environment in the semi-arid region by means of the adoption of specific policies for that sub-region.

“The construction of this agreement is important, and the institutions have aspects in common. The IBGE is prepared to produce information and indicate subsequent actions that can help the creation of high-quality public policies. Sudene plans actions aimed at regional development, also based on studies and statistics. That is a strategic cooperation that produces gains in the Northeast Region,” stated Danilo Cabral, superintendent of Sudene.

“The Northeast has potentialities that can increase in dynamics as a result of this partnership, and, although both institutions may profit from the proposal, the Brazilian society will be the one benefiting most from it,” concluded Flavia Vinhaes.
