In a crowded auditorium, IBGE releases results of the 2022 Census: characteristics of housing units, in Diadema (SP)

Before an audience of more than 700 persons, including face-to-face and online participants, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released, on Friday, 23, the result of the 2022 Census: characteristics of housing units – results of the universe, at Clara Nunes Theater, downtown Diadema (SP). The event was broadcast by the Digital IBGE website and by four social media channels of the Institute, an event that received the support from the Municipal Administration of Diadema and of the Intermunicipal Consortium of the Great ABC Area.
Representatives of the IBGE at the event were the president of the IBGE, Márcio Pochmann, the directorate of Geosciences, Ivone Lopes Batista, the deputy director of Surveys, João Hallack, the IBGE state superintendent in São Paulo, Francisco Barcia, the head of the IBGE Branch in Diadema, Geraldo Carneiro, the mayor of Diadema, José de Filippi Junior, the vice mayor Patty Ferreira, besides city councilors, congresspeople and other authorities.
The first step of the event was the summoning of the technical team for the presentation of characteristics of housing units, formed by the presentation of housing units, the deputy director of Surveys, João Hallack, the technical manager of the Census, Gustavo Junger, the researchers Bruno Mandelli, from the Director of surveys, and Rafael Damiati, from the Directorate of Geosciences, and by the director of Geosciences, Ivone Lopes Batista.
During the presentation, the technical team presented important characteristics of Brazilian housing units, such as the form of water supply, of garbage disposal, existence of a bathroom and type of sewage disposal.
At the end of his presentation, Bruno Mandelli showed, besides national data, municipal data from some regions, as it was the case of Diadema. Rafael Damiati also approached the use of the Interactive Geographic Platform, by means of tutorials on how to access and search for recently released data.
The next ones to speak were the president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, the IBGE Superintendent in São Paulo, Francisco Garrido Barcia, the mayor of Diadema, José de Filippi Júnior and the vice-mayor of Diadema, Patrícia Ferreira, and also the state congressman Eduardo Suplicy besides city councilors.
The first one to make a speech was the vice-mayor of Patrícia Ferreira, who reinforced the importance of this release, since “the data will guide new national public national, state and municipal policies, in order to reduce inequalities in the country”. Right after that, the mayor congratulated and thanked all the participants and expressed his gratitude for hosting the event in his municipality. “I am extremely grateful to the IBGE for giving the municipality of Diadema this opportunity. Hosting such an important event makes us very proud. I know how difficult it is to conduct a Census. In spite of the problems, the IBGE managed to complete it and was able to generate all those valuable data that can be used by every mayor in the country. These data will be the basis upon which our municipalities will assess current actions and go on in our path towards social and economic development.”
Then Francisco Barcia thanked Diadema and recalled the difficulties faced by all the enumerators in Brazil and in the state in order to collect the data presented. “Data collection was successful, despite everything, because we got to visit the hours of all Brazilians and collect data that will help mayors, the house of representatives and public agents,” said the IBGE superintendent in São Paulo.
To close the event, Marcio Pochmann expressed his gratitude to the mayor for offering a place a place for the release of results and also to all those who worked in the organization of the ceremony. He also spoke about ths history of the Census and contextualized the importance of the Institute, which is one of the first surveus to visit all housing units in Brazil. “We hope these data will be a good source of information for public agents and for the society aiming at reducing inequalities in the country. The IBGE only releases the results, but it is the agent’s job to interpret and change the reality of Brazil”.
