Animal slaughter grows in Q4 2022

Cattle slaughter increased by 6.9%, slaughter of hogs and pigs grew by 2.7% and chicken slaughter rose by 2.1% in the 4th quarter of 2022, compared to the same period of the previous year. Compared to the 3rd quarter of 2022, cattle slaughter fell by 5.2%, slaughter of hogs and pigs decreased by 4.5% and chicken slaughter rose by 2.0%.
The production of hen eggs reached 1.03 billion dozen, the sixth quarter of the time series with production above 1 billion units. This is what the preliminary results of the Livestock Production Statistics, released today (February 10) by the IBGE, show. The complete results for the 4th quarter of 2022 and for the states will be released on March 15.
7.44 million cattle head were slaughtered in this 4th quarter, an increase of 6.9% compared to the 4th quarter of 2021 and a reduction of 5.2% compared to the previous quarter. Slaughter generated 2.02 million metric tons of carcasses, an increase of 4.7% compared to the same period in 2021 and a decrease of 5.6% compared to the amount obtained in the previous quarter.
With regard to hogs and pigs, 13.80 million head were registered, an increase of 2.7% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and a decrease of 4.5% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2022.
The cumulative weight of carcasses registered 1.27 million metric tons in the 4th quarter of 2022, an increase of 3.0% compared to the 4th quarter of 2021 and a decrease of 5.1% compared to the previous quarter.
Chicken slaughter has highs in the year and in the quarter
Also in this 4th quarter, 1.56 billion chicken heads were slaughtered. This result meant an increase of 2.1% compared to the equivalent quarter of the previous year and an increase of 2.0% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2022.
The cumulative weight of carcasses was 3.32 million metric tons in the 4th quarter of 2022. This total meant an increase of 4.7% compared to the 4th quarter of 2021 and an increase of 3.5% compared to the previous quarter.
Milk acquisition has a drop in the annual comparison, but an increase of 2.0% in the quarter compared to the 3rd quarter
The purchase of raw milk made by establishments that operate under municipal, state or federal sanitary inspection was 6.23 billion liters, a reduction of 4.2% compared to the 4th quarter of 2021, and an increase of 2.0% in comparison with the previous quarter.
The tanneries that tanned at least five thousand whole units of bovine rawhide per year declared having received 7.55 million pieces of leather. This result represents an increase of 4.5% compared to that recorded in the 4th quarter of 2021 and a decrease of 5.5% compared to the previous quarter.
Production of hen eggs rises 3.1% in the year and 1.3% in the quarter
The production of hen eggs reached 1.03 billion dozen, with an increase of 3.1% compared to the 4th quarter of 2021 and 1.3% compared to the previous quarter. This was the sixth time that the quarterly production of hen eggs in Brazil exceeded 1 billion dozen since the beginning of the time series of the survey, in 1987.
Review of chicken time series
As of the 4th quarter of 2022, revised data from the survey's time series (since 1997) will be presented for chickens as it was found that live weight records of chickens were used instead of carcass weight. New data entry editing and reports have been implemented. More information can be found in the highlight section on the IBGE website.
