The production of the national industry expanded in ten out of 15 places between November and December. These are the results of the Monthly Survey of Industry (Regional PIM), released today (10) by the IBGE. With the result of the last month of the year, 2022 closes with negative rates in eight out of 15 places surveyed.

The biggest drops in the year were the results in Pará (-9.1%), the major influence, and in Espírito Santo (-8.4%), which were mainly due to the retreat recorded by the sectors of mining and quarrying industries and iron ore in the former; and of mining and quarrying industries (crude petroleum oil, pelleted or sintered iron ore and natural gas), non-metallic mineral products and basic metals in the latter.

Paraná (-4.2%) exerted the second biggest negative influence on the year´s result. “The sector of petroleum products was the one that mostly negatively contributed, with the dropping output of diesel fuel and fuel oils. In the case of Santa Catarina (-4.3%), the third biggest negative influence, the sector of textiles (bathing suit and fabric tape) was the major factor,” explains Bernardo Almeida, an analyst of the survey.

Ceará (-4.9%), Pernambuco (-2.3%), Minas Gerais (-1.3%) and the Northeast Region (-1.0%) also dropped in the cumulative index in 2022.

“Industry began the year of 2022 with positive rates in a row, followed by a downturn of the national output from the second semester onwards. The acceleration of inflation and the resulting increase of the interest rate directly affected the purchasing power of families. The creation of low-compensation jobs impacted as well. Shortage of some inputs and increase of prices of raw material also contributed, though at a lower degree,” highlights Almeida.

On the other hand, Mato Grosso (19.4%) reported the most significant advance in the cumulative index in the year. It was specially due to the positive behavior of the sectors of food products (frozen, fresh or cooled beef and tarts, bagasses, bran and other residues from soybean oil extraction) and coke, petroleum products and biofuels (ethyl alcohol).

Rio de Janeiro (4.6%), Amazonas (3.8%), Bahia (2.4%), Goiás (1.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.1%) and São Paulo (0.2%) reported the other positive rates in the cumulative indicator of the January-December 2022 period. “The biggest positive influence on the result of Rio de Janeiro came from the sector of petroleum products, very active in the state´s industry. The output of fuel oils, diesel fuel, motor gasoline and aviation kerosene increased. In Amazonas, ranked in the third position of positive influence, the sector of beverages stood out,” details Almeida. He also states that São Paulo, the largest industrial park in Brazil, registered a timid growth, with a moderate pace of production. “Industry in São Paulo recorded highs and lows during the year rather than a sustainable growth, as well as in the national figure.”

Ten out of 15 places surveyed reported positive results in December over November

Compared with the previous month, th output in industry registered a null change (0.0%) in December 2022, with ten out of 15 places surveyed reporting positive figures. The most significant advances came from Mato Grosso (5.8%) and Amazonas (5.6%), both of them reporting the second consecutive month of growth in the output, a period in which they accumulated gains of 8.9% and 5.8%, respectively.

Ceará (4.3%), Paraná (3.9%), Pernambuco (2.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.0%), Rio de Janeiro (0.8%), Santa Catarina (0.7%), Northeast Region (0.6%) and Pará (0.5%) were the other places that recorded positive indexes in December 2022.

In contrast, Espírito Santo (-6.8%) and Minas Gerais (-4.9%) were responsible for the most intense reductions this month, the former offsetting the growth reported in the previous month (7.3%) and the latter interrupting two consecutive months of expanding output, a period in which it accumulated a gain of 3.8%. Goiás (-3.7%), São Paulo (-1.2%) and Bahia (-0.6%) reported the other negative figures this month.

More about the survey

The Regional PIM has been producing short-term indicators since the 1970s regarding the behavior of the real product from mining and quarrying and manufacturing industries. It presents, every month, indexes for 14 Federation Units, each one accounting for at least 1% of the national value of manufacturing, and also for the Northeast Region as a whole: Amazonas, Pará, Ceará, Pernambuco, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso, Goiás and the Northeast Region.

The survey results can also be consulted on Sidra, the IBGE database.
