"The seminar will make it possible to discuss possibilities regarding the integration of statistics produced by a number o institutions with the territorial subdivision of Favelas and Poor Urban Communities produced by the IBGE, resulting in the construction of powerful anaytical tools to guide, not only by sector, but also in terms of territories and at different scales, the work of the State. From the perspective of the IBGE's Department of Favelas and Poor Urban Communities, the the articulation with institutions that produce data means the possibility of improving processes of identification and classification of these areas, aiming at future operations, such as the 2030 Population Census." Letícia Giannella, Manager of the Favelas and Poor Urban Communities Department, explains.

The recognition of favelas and poor urban communities as a structuring part of the Brazilian territory is fundamental for the advance of equity-aimed policies. In this context, the IBGE has improved data collection instruments, systematization and dissemination of data, with a highlight to the update of the representation of these areas in the Population Census — an important element to understand the urban diversity in Brazil.

According to the director of the Department of Interfederative and Participative Managament of the Ministry of Health, André Luis Bonifácio, to strengthen the production and use of data about the peripheries is essential to build fair public policies that show the reality of territories and meet the concrete needs  of the population. “This seminar reaffirms the commitment of the Ministry with equity and the defense of the right to health for all.”

The seminar is organized by the Coordination General for Participation and Articulation with Social Movements of the Ministry of Health, linked to the  Department of Interfederative and Participative Managament of the Executive Secretariat, in partnership with the IBGE, the Advisory for Social Participation and Diversity, the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation of Brasília (Fiocruz Brasília) and the Ministry of Communications.
