Compared to the previous month, the industrial sector changed 0.1% in October 2025, after recording a loss of 0.4% in September. With these results, the industrial production is 2.4% above the pre-pandemic level (February 2020), but still 14.8% below the record level reached in May 2011.
In comparison with October 2024, the overall industry recorded a drop in production again and retreated 0.5%.
In the cumulative index in the year, the industrial sector advanced 0.8%, and, in the last 12 months, growth was 0.9%, remaining in the positive field, but showing a loss of pace compared to the results of previous months. The data are from the Monthly Industrial Survey (PIM), released today (2) by the IBGE.
In the seasonally-adjusted series, three out of four broad economic categories and 12 out of 25 industrial sectors surveyed showed an expansion in production in October 2025 compared to the immediately previous month. The major influence was that of mining and quarrying industries, which grew 3.6% in October. According to the manager of the survey, André Macedo, “the advance was influenced by the greater extraction of petroleum, iron ore and natural gas. It is worth highlighting that the growth observed in October 2025 offset the loss of 1.7% accumulated in the months of August and September of this year.”
Other positive highlights came from the sectors of food products (0.9%), motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (2.0%), chemicals (1.3%), computer equipment, electronic and optical products (4.1%) and manufacturing of wearing apparel and accessories (3.8%).
On the other hand, among the 13 activities that showed a decline in production, coke, petroleum products and biofuels (-3.9%) and pharmochemicals and pharmaceuticals (-10.8%) exerted the major impacts on the industry average. “The former stepped up the 0.5% drop seen in the previous month and was pressured by downtime in production units in the sector that impacted the production of oil derivatives. In the pharmaceutical industry, which accumulated a loss of 19.8% in two consecutive months of decline in production, after increasing 28.6% in the May-August period in 2025, the manufacture of medicines reduced,” explains the survey manager. Other negative influences on the industry total came from printing and reproduction of recorded media (-28.6%) and tobacco products (-19.5%).
Among the broad economic categories, still in comparison with September 2025, durable consumer goods, by advancing 2.7%, recorded the highest positive rate in October and offset the 1.3% decline seen in the previous month. The sectors producing capital goods (1.0%) and semi and non-durable consumer goods (1.0%) also showed advances this month. The former accumulated gains of 1.4% in two consecutive months of advances in production; and the latter returned to growth after recording -0.1% in the previous month, when it interrupted two consecutive months of positive rates, a period in which it accumulated expansion of 1.3%. On the other hand, the segment of intermediate goods (-0.8%) showed the only negative result in October 2025 and stepped up the 0.4% loss seen in September.
In comparison with the same month of the previous year, the industrial sector showed a decline of 0.5% in October 2025, with negative results in three out of four broad economic categories, 15 out of 25 sectors, 53 out of 80 groups and 53.0% of the 789 products surveyed. Among the activities, the major negative influences on the overall industry were recorded by coke, petroleum products and biofuels (-10.7%) and motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (-8.4%). Other negative highlights were recorded by the sectors of pharmochemicals and pharmaceuticals (-9.3%), fabricated metal products (-5.9%), electrical machinery and apparatus (-6.3%), printing and reproduction of recorded media (-18.7%), wooden products (-10.7%), chemicals (-1.0%) and leather articles, travel articles and footwear (-4.3%).
On the other hand, still in comparison with October 2024, among the ten activities that showed expansion in production, those of mining and quarrying industries (10.1%) and food products (5.3%) exerted the greatest influence on the formation of the industry average. Other important positive impacts were recorded by the sectors of maintenance, repair and installation of machinery and equipment (10.1%), other transportation equipment (8.3%), machinery and equipment (2.7%) and textiles (5.9%).
More on the survey
PIM Brazil has been producing short-term indicators since the 1970s regarding the behavior of the real product of the mining and quarrying and manufacturing industries. March 2023 marked the beginning of the release of the new time series of monthly indexes of the industrial production, after a redesign to update the sample of activities, products and informants; create a new weighting structure of the indexes based on the most recent industrial statistics; update the base year of reference of the survey; and incorporate new Federation Units in the release of regional results of the survey. These methodological changes are required and they aim at incorporating the economic changes of society.
The survey results can also be consulted on Sidra. The next release of PIM Brazil, with results for the month of November 2025, will be on January 8.
