Third place announced for Brazil

The announcement was made this Thursday (October 9th) during the 65th World Statistical Congress of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) in The Hague, Netherlands.

The 2024–2025 International Statistical Poster Competition has two Brazilians among the winners. The announcement was made this Thursday (October 9th) during the 65th World Statistical Congress of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) in The Hague, Netherlands. Diêgo Bezerra de Melo Maciel, a professor of Economics at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), and his student André Augusto Canizza won third place in the global competition with an analysis of the use of generative technologies by Brazilian economics undergraduates and their perceptions of satisfaction and academic confidence in the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in statistical learning.

The poster, titled "Use of Generative AI by Brazilian Economics Students: Satisfaction and Confidence in the Context of Learning Statistics," had already been awarded first place in category D, aimed at undergraduate students, in the national round of the competition.

"Winning the award in the world round has given me more courage and determination to face the challenges that teaching statistics constantly poses," Mr. Maciel emphasized. "In fact, all of this is part of a struggle to build a statistical education system in which the concepts taught have practical meaning and make sense in students' lives."

"I am extremely honored with this achievement and to have the opportunity to represent Brazil in a global competition. This award is a very important recognition for my academic and professional career. I want to thank my professor, Mr. Maciel, whose support and mentorship were essential in getting us this far," celebrated André.

The Brazilian Round of the 2024-2025 International Statistical Poster Competition was organized by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), through its National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE), in partnership with the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (FURG) and its Center for Innovation in Statistical Education (ICE). Participants were challenged to tell a story using statistical data and tools and illustrate it on a poster.

At the IBGE, the Brazilian Round also received organizational support from the Educational Affairs Department of the Center for Information Documentation and Dissemination (CDDI), which runs the IBGEeduca project, a website focused on education. Together, the CCDI, the Social Communications Division (CCS), and ENCE devised a strategy to launch the competition with previous notification, funding allocation for the winners, and events in schools for students and teachers to learn how to create the posters. The result was a significant increase in registrations, with record participation. The IBGE President, Marcio Pochmann, celebrated the results of the institution's hard work and efforts in statistical literacy: "Further proof of the international recognition of IBGE's work now comes from the global statistical poster competition to solve problems in various fields of knowledge. Due to ENCE's important work, the Brazilian presence received unprecedented recognition with the award at the World Statistical Congress in the Netherlands."

ENCE coordinator Bianca Walsh is in The Hague for the ISI World Statistical Congress and, moved, went up the stage at the International Statistical Poster Competition to receive the award on behalf of Brazil. "It was very moving to see a Brazilian poster win third place in the competition. We will win many more," she remarked.

IBGE's Educational Affairs Manager, Marcos Balster Fiore Correia, said that the whole team is excited about the international award for Diêgo and André's Brazilian poster: "This achievement was a great reward for all of us who had the opportunity and the joy of carrying out this important action in favor of statistical literacy."

Aimed at students and teachers in Basic and Higher Education, the competition is held every two years and is part of the ISLP 2024–2025 Poster Competition, promoted by the International Statistical Literacy Project (ISLP), a statistical literacy fostering project of the International Association for Statistical Education (IASE), in partnership with ISI. Groups of a maximum of 1 to 5 students were eligible to participate, provided they were supervised by a Basic or Higher Education teacher, who must register in the competition.

The international award comes on the eve of the national celebration, as the Awards Ceremony for the Brazilian Round of the 2024–2025 International Statistical Poster Competition will take place next Monday (October 13th) at 10:00 am at Casa Brasil IBGE, in the Palácio da Fazenda, in downtown Rio de Janeiro. The exhibition of the winning posters from the Brazilian Round will be inaugurated on that occasion, including Diêgo and André's work.
