Quarterly livestock surveys: slaughter of cattle, hogs and pigs, and chicken grow in Q1

The results of the animal production in the first quarter of 2025 pointed out that cattle slaughter rose 4.6% compared with the same period in 2024 and 1.9% compared with the previous quarter.
The slaughter of hogs and pigs increased 1.6% in relation to the same period in 2024 and fell 0.8% compared with the fourth quarter of 2024. Chicken slaughter rose 2.3% in relation to the same period in 2024 and increased 1.0% compared with the fourth quarter of 2024.
Acquisition of raw milk reached 6.49 billion liters in the first quarter of 2025, with a rise of 3.4% in relation to the first quarter of 2024 and a drop of 4.3% against the immediately previous quarter.
Acquisition of rawhide by tanneries rose 15.7% in relation to the same quarter in the previous year and increased 8.1% against the fourth quarter of 2024, adding up to 10.75 million rawhide pieces.
In the first quarter of 2025, 1.20 billion hen eggs were produced, a rise of 8.3% in relation to the same quarter last year and a drop of 1.0% over the amount registered in the immediately previous quarter.

Cattle slaughter remains rising in Q1 2025
In the first quarter of 2025, 9.87 million cattle head under some sort of sanitary inspection were slaughtered. It increased 4.6% compared with the same period in the previous year and 1.9% in relation to the fourth quarter of 2024.
January was the month with the greatest activity in the quarter, slaughtering 3.35 million head, a positive change of 4.8% in relation to the same month last year. Slaughter of females rose 11.3% over the same period in 2024, which showed the continuation of an increasing trend of this category in the first months of 2025.
Slaughter of more 435.61 thousand cattle head in the first quarter of 2025, over the same period a year ago, was leveraged by the increase in 22 out of 27 Federation Units (FUs). Among those with a national share above 1.0%, the most significant increase occurred in São Paulo (+88.38 thousand head), Rondônia (+53.25 thousand head), Pará (+47.85 thousand head), Minas Gerais (+34.39 thousand head), Mato Grosso do Sul (+ 33.98 thousand head), Pernambuco (+33.12 thousand head), Tocantins (+29.94 thousand head), Acre (+21.43 thousand head) and Paraná (+14.20 thousand head).
Conversely, the most significant drops occurred in Mato Grosso (-38.99 thousand head) and Rio Grande do Sul (-7.63 thousand head).
With a national share of 16.9%, Mato Grosso remained leading cattle slaughter, followed by São Paulo (10.6%) and Goiás (10.3%).
Slaughter of hogs and pigs reaches best Q1 in time series
14.33 million head of hogs and pigs were slaughtered in the first quarter of 2025, representing a rise of 1.6% in relation to the same period in 2024 and a drop of 0.8% in the comparison with the fourth quarter of 2024. That result in the slaughter of hogs and pigs registered the best January ever and meant the best first quarter in the time series started in 1997.
The slaughter of more 230.99 thousand head of hogs and pigs in the first quarter of 2025, in relation to the same period a year ago, was leveraged by rises in 17 out of 26 Federation Units under the scope of the survey. Among the states with a share above 1.0%, increases were registered in Rio Grande do Sul (+171.86 thousand head), Minas Gerais (+68.96 thousand head), Santa Catarina (+67.20 thousand head), Paraná (+32.53 thousand head), Goiás (+21.50 thousand head) and Mato Grosso (+21.00 thousand head). Conversely, drops were recorded in Mato Grosso do Sul (-141.11 thousand head) and São Paulo (-20.52 thousand head).
Santa Catarina remained leading the slaughter of hogs and pigs, with 29.4% of the national share, followed by Paraná (21.9%) and Rio Grande do Sul (18.2%).
Chicken slaughter records the best result for a first quarter ever
1.64 billion chicken head were slaughtered in the first quarter of 2025, representing an increase of 2.3% in relation to the same period in 2024 and of 1.0% compared with the fourth quarter of 2024. The survey registered the best months of January and February ever in the time series started in 1997.
The slaughter of more 37.17 million chicken head in the first quarter of 2025, in relation to the same period in the previous year, was determined by increases in the slaughter in 20 out of 25 FUs analyzed in the survey. Among those with a share above 1.0%, the most significant increases occurred in Santa Catarina (+12.84 million head), São Paulo (+10.81 million head), Paraná (+10.45 million head) and Bahia (+1.48 million head). Conversely, the most significant drops occurred in Rio Grande do Sul (-2.04 million head) and Mato Grosso do Sul (-1.26 million head).
Paraná remained leading the slaughter of chicken in Brazil, with 34.6% of the national share, followed by Santa Catarina (14.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (11.5%).
Milk acquisition rose 3.4% compared with the same period in the previous year
6.49 billion liters of raw milk were acquired in the first quarter of 2025, the equivalent to an increase of 3.4% in relation to the first quarter of 2024 and a reduction of 4.3% compared with the immediately previous quarter.
Concerning the average price of milk paid to producers (R$2.76), it increased 22.1% in relation to the same period a year ago and remained stable in relation to the fourth quarter of 2024.
The South Region reported the highest proportion in the acquisition of raw milk (39.6%), followed by the Southeast (36.3%), Central-West (10.9%), Northeast (9.3%) and the North Region (3.9%). Comparing the first quarter of 2025 with the same period in 2024, the increase of 210.55 million liters of milk acquired at national level was due to the rises reported in 19 out of 26 FUs participating in the Quarterly Survey of Milk.
In terms of Federation Units, the most significant positive changes occurred in Paraná (+91.56 million liters), Minas Gerais (+34.46 million liters), Rio Grande do Sul (+27.31 million liters), Sergipe (+21.98 million liters), Goiás (+15.87 million liters) and Bahia (+11.35 million liters). The major drops occurred in Rio de Janeiro (-9.88 million liters), Mato Grosso (-7.35 million liters) and Rondônia (-4.53 million liters). Minas Gerais still led the ranking of milk acquisition, with 25.1% of the national acquisition, followed by Paraná (15.4%), Santa Catarina (12.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (12.0%).
Acquisition of leather grows 15.7% in relation to Q1 2024
The tanning houses investigated in the Quarterly Survey of Leather reported to have received 10.75 million whole cattle rawhides in the first quarter of 2025. This total represented an increase of 15.7% in relation to the same quarter last year and a rise of 8.1% compared with the immediately previous quarter.
The comparison between the first quarters of 2024 and 2025 pointed out a positive change of 1.46 million pieces in the total purchased by the establishments. Twelve out of 17 Federation Units with tanning houses selected by the survey increased. The most significant positive changes in states with more than 5.0% of share in the national acquisition occurred in Goiás (+1.03 million pieces), Mato Grosso do Sul (+94.47 thousand pieces) and Pará (+63.51 thousand pieces). The major drops occurred in São Paulo (-51.30 thousand pieces) and Mato Grosso (-44.93 thousand pieces).
Goiás remained leading among the FUs that received rawhide pieces to be processed, with 23.0% of the national share, followed by Mato Grosso (14.5%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (11.7%).
Production of hen eggs records 1.20 billion dozen
The production of hen eggs reached 1.20 billion dozen in the first quarter of 2025, corresponding to an increase of 8.3% in relation to that recorded in the same quarter a year ago and a drop of 1.0% over the amount registered in the immediately previous quarter.
The production of more 92.14 million dozen eggs at the national level, if comparing the first quarters of 2025 and 2024, was a consequence of the increase in the production of 25 out of 26 FUs with eligible chicken farms. The most significant increases occurred in Minas Gerais (+14.54 million dozen), São Paulo (+13.95 million dozen), Espírito Santo (+10.62 million dozen) and Pernambuco (+10.50 million dozen).
It unveiled that more than half of the chicken farms, 1,132 or 55.0%, produced eggs for consumption, accounting for 83.0% of the eggs produced, whereas 925 chicken farms (45.0%) produced eggs for incubation, accounting for 17.0% of the eggs produced.
In the first quarter of 2025, the state of São Paulo, with 25.4% of the national output, remained as the biggest producer of eggs among the FUs, followed by Minas Gerais (9.7%), Paraná (9.5%) and Espírito Santo (8.1%).
