On December 18 at 11 am, the UN Hub for Big Data in Brazil will carry out a webinar on innovations in agricultural statistics by means of Earth Observation (EO) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Enrollment is free of charge and is already open. To participate, just enroll on link https://hub.ibge.gov.br/index.htm.

Also available in Spanish, the webinar aims at fostering a regional dialog on the adoption of cutting-edge technologies to transform agricultural data into instruments of significant change. The speaker will be Lorenzo de Simone, a technical advisor of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations´ (FAO) Agrifood Economics and Policy Division (ESA).

The use of advanced technologies, like EO and AI, are transforming the way agricultural data are collected, analyzed and applied. These tools provide innovative solutions for traditional challenges, improving the precision, efficiency and impact of the agricultural statistics in the support to public policies and in challenging global issues like food security and climate changes.

Lorenzo de Simone will present the potential of these technologies to transform agricultural statistics and improve awareness of their practical applications. He will talk about two workshops scheduled for 2025 that will provide detailed skills and technical case studies.

ENCE/IBGE coordinates UN Regional Hub for Big Data in Brazil

Resulting from a partnership between the IBGE and the UN Statistics Division, the UN Regional Hub for Big Data in Brazil (https://hub.ibge.gov.br) was launched in November 2021 in the XI Statistical Conference of the Americas, carried out by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The Hub is hosted in the National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE), the IBGE´s academic arm that coordinates the efforts and contributions from different areas to support the activities of the Regional Hub.

The project aims at contributing to the advance in the use of Big Data to improve the production of official statistics, by sharing knowledge and developing innovative initiatives in Latin America and the Caribbean. In addition to Brazil, four other countries also integrate this initiative as headquarters of either global or regional hubs: United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Rwanda and China.
