Translation tool makes IBGE website available in more than 100 languages

A translation tool that enables users to access information produced by the IBGE in 101 languages is available on the IBGE website. That is one more initiative aimed at the expansion of the role played by the IBGE in the international scenario of public statistics, and it was launched during the press conference with foreign correspondents given by Marcio Pochmann, president of the Institute, and held at Casa G20 (G20 House), in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro.
At first, the language button for machine translation will be available on three portals: the IBGE portal, na IBGE News Agency and the 2022 Population Census page.
The coordinator of the IBGE’s Online Experience and Services Department, Leandro Albertini, showed how to use the tool. “Our content has been translated by a team of translators who are civil servants at the IBGE. Now we are making use of technology and implementing machine translation. That is a tool that uses Google Translate,” he explained.
At the top right corner of the pages, one can choose the language by clicking on the flags – Brazil or United Kingdom – that indicate Portuguese or English language. With this new tool, now there is another option, “Other languages”, which lists 101 languages available for selection. As the user clicks on a given language, all the information on the pages will be automatically translated.
“These machine translations would be possible anyway. The browser itself would present a choice such as “Translate this page” to users trying to visit our website. But this option would only be available for browsers configured with a language other than Portuguese, trying to access a page on the Institute’s website, which is hosted in Brazil. Our objective was to have this option permanently available at out page, thus giving the user the opportunity of having the content available in more than 101 languages without the need of other tools,” Mr. Albertini remarked.
From the perspective of the Institute’s role in the international scenario, the IBGE manager of International Relations, Roberto Sant'Anna, highlighted the importance of making the Institute’s portals more accessible to a greater number of people around the world.
“This implementation is of fundamental importance since it helps us break the barriers of language. It will be easier for people from all parts of the world to reach the IBGE and its products and, therefore, they will learn more about our society ad its varied aspects, whether economic, social, or environmental. We have a lot to gain and so do the country and the world,” Mr. Sant'Anna adds.
After the implementation in the three portals and a period of testing of the initiative and its results, the team plans to expand the project and make translations of other IBGE pages available in a near future.
