The president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, met, on March 21st, with the President of the Republic of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in an audience at Palácio Alvorada, in Brasília. For more than an hour, Pochmann and Lula talked about the modernization of IBGE, which includes innovations in the collection, production, documentation and dissemination of statistical information and georeferenced data. The changes occur within the institutional context of the Institute's almost 90 years of existence, in the light of the need for national sovereignty in the Digital Era.

To implement the new IBGE, there is a collective effort to rethink the body, its structure, a career for civil servants measured up to this new challenge, as well as a budget capable of boosting the timely model of delivering production demands to the powers of the Republic (executive , legislative and judiciary), as well as to companies, universities and society as a whole and its representations, inside and outside Brazil.

“The IBGE as a State institution should never be isolated. The financing of its activities, working conditions and civil servants' careers are associated with the federal public budget. In this context, the current administration has opened dialogue channels with all powers of the Republic. After open dialogues with practically all ministries, the strategic meeting with President Lula was fundamental for the delivery of the 2024 Work Plan, as well as the presentation of the next steps of the IBGE 90 years project”, explained Marcio Pochmann.

At the meeting, Marcio Pochmann delivered to President Lula the IBGE Work Plan for 2024, which is being implemented based on the 12 Guidelines democratically defined during the IBGE 90 Years Dialogues project, started in September 2023, and which had around 10 thousand participations from active and retired civil servants, unionists and collaborators. As scheduled in the Plan, "External Dialogues" are being run, initially held in Palmas (UFT) and Florianópolis (UFSC), and should reach all Brazilian states and abroad.

Marcio Pochmann invited President Lula to Confest/Confege, IBGE's historic conferences, which revive the institutional protagonism among data producers and users. The central theme of the event, chosen by the IBGE, is the construction of the National System of Geosciences, Statistics and Data (SINGED).
