The first session of the event, which is part of the activities in the 5th National Conference of Science, Technology, and Innovation (CNCTI) also received the Dean for Extension Programs of UERJ, Ana Santiago; the director for the Department of Partnerships and Development of the Ministry of Labor, Fernando Zamban; and the municipal secretary for Science and Technology in Rio de Janeiro, Tatiana Roque.

The first round of discussions had as its main topic the use of science, technology, and innovation for the development of society. In the opening speech, the secretary for Science and Technology for Social Development of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI), Inácio Arruda, mediator of the panel, called attention to the importance of making scientific knowledge more popular so that it is not limited to the academic community. “This meeting has the objective of examining the Brazilian reality and thinking of solutions to the challenges we have. All of our diverse population, and not just a small part of it, should be engaged in this debate.

In his talk, president Marcio Pochmann, reinforced the uniqueness of this moment for the conference, given the massive use of digital resources in people’s everyday lives, with an impact on a number of sectors. “We are in a new era the Digital Era. It questions the political autonomy of nations. The IBGE, for example, has less information about Brazilians than some major global technology companies. Brazil needs to have digital sovereignty,” he remarked.

Another topic mentioned by Mr. Pochmann was the evasion of qualified professionals from Brazil. “We’ve seen, for some time, a severe crisis due to the escape of brains. More than four million Brazilians live abroad, and most of them are highly educated people who found no opportunities her. Science and technology are essential to transform our reality, and push past our fear of innovation.”

“I reckon the discussion about scientific dissemination has never been more relevant. At times marked by denialism, it is essential that we work to transport knowledge beyond university walls. We have not yet succeeded in putting economic and social development together, and the government is important to help reduce social inequalities,” said Tatiana Roque.

A plenary session is scheduled for the last day of the event, and also a debate to approve the guiding document. The closing session will have the participation of the following authorities: Inácio Arruda, secretary for Science and Technology for Social Development of the MCTI; Gulnar Azevedo e Silva, dean of UERJ; Silvia Massruhá, president of Embrapa; Lourdes Oliveira, vice-president for Research and Biological Collections of Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ); Celso Pansera, president of the Funding Agency for Studies and Projects (FINEP); Jandira Feghali, federal deputy (PcdoB/RJ); Marcio Macedo, Minister of the Secretariat General for the Presidency of the Republic and Luciana Santos, Minister of Science, Technology and innovation.

The 5th CNCTI will be held on June 4-6 this year, in Brasília (DF). The topic of the meeting will be “Science, Technology and Innovation for a Fair, Sustainable and Developed Brazil”. The conference held at UERJ is part of a group of Spaces for dialogue, formed by state and municipal events and free thematic meetings. The purpose is to speak to different actors in Society, such as representatives of scientific institutions, non-governmental organizations, professional associations, the academic community, among others.
