On Thursday, 14, the IBGE met with representatives from Unicef (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund) Brazil, at the Institute’s headquarter, in Rio de Janeiro, to share experiences about the 2022 Census and other surveys and to identify possible projects for a future partnership. During the meeting, the UN agency presented its global commitments regarding data and statistics.

President Marcio Pochmann, director of surveys Cimar Azeredo and Roberto Sant’Anna, manager of international relations, attended the meeting, and Unicef was represented by chief statistician, João Pedro Azevedo, social policy chief, Liliana Chopitea, and the monitoring and evaluation officer, Willian Wives.

Pochmann mentioned the long-term relationship between the IBGE and Unicef, and the future steps of this partnership. “It is a tradition of the IBGE to work with multilateral agencies, and the Unicef, due to its importance for childhood, has been a great partner of the survey Institute on this theme. In a conversation with the chief statistician, a group a activities was set to be conducted in coming years, from 2024 on. We also approached the topic of Brazil’s leadership in G-20 [the world’s 20 biggest economies] and what kinds of actions can be performed by these two countries together,” said the president of the IBGE.

Unicef’s chief of statistics, Azevedo spoke about the role of the Institute as a reference that goes beyond Brazil. “We see the IBGE as one of our strategic partners in the world, in the field of data production. That transcends Brazil and the Institute is also a major partner in the generation of statistics for children, teenagers and youngsters, which is particularly important to us. We’ve got a lot to learn from the Institute and so have many countries. We’ll do whatever we can to strengthen this process in Brazil,” said Azevedo.

Mr. Sant’Anna highlighted the central aspect of the exchange of experiences with multilateral agencies. “This meeting was important for us to define some guidelines for the work in data about childhood in Brazil. The idea is that we also get to know international experiences,” says the international relations manager of the IBGE.

Liliana Chopitea reinforced how important data produced by the Institute are for policies related to the children and youth population. “This partnership has lasted many years and it is essential for Unicef to work with the IBGE, because we are very concerned about data on children and teenagers. We have an extremely important source, the Census, and that is a wonderful opportunity for cooperation in monitoring these statistics,” said the social policy chief for Unicef Brazil.
