Mato Grosso led the slaughter of cattle in the third quarter of 2018, in the comparison with the same period last year: 1,4 million cattle head, which leveraged the state to a participation of 17.2%, followed by Goiás, with 10.3%, and Mato Grosso do Sul, with 9.7%.

The data are part of the Livestock Statistics, released today by the IBGE. Besides the regional results, the surveys updates the national preliminary information made available on November 11.

In the national scenario, the survey confirmed the 8.2 million cattle head slaughtered in the country in 2018, which represented a growth of 7.2% against the previous quarter and of 3.6% against the same period last year.

According to survey manager Bernardo Viscardi, growth in cattle head, both for Brazil and Mato Grosso, can be attributed to import increase: “competitive prices in the foreign market boosted the slaughter of bovine animals when we compare it with the figures of the third quarter last year. By the way, Mato Grosso, which was the leader in cattle slaughter, also stood at first among the states that most exported meat”.

Record in volume of slaughter of hogs and pigs

The slaughter of hogs and pigs, in turn, totaled 11.56 million head, 6.8% higher than the previous quarter and 4.7% higher than in the same period of 2017. This was the largest result of the survey time series, initiated in 1997. Santa Catarina led, with 26.8% of the national participation, followed by Paraná, 20.9%, and Rio Grande do Sul, 18.3%.

"The increase in the volume of slaughtered animals was mainly due to the increase in the domestic demand, which naturally increases in the second half of the year, and to exports. However, the result was not a record in terms of revenue, mostly because of the decrease of Russian imports," adds the manager.

Egg production has the highest result for a third quarter

With an estimated volume of more than 919 million dozen, hen egg production hit a record in the third quarter of the survey time series, begun in 1987. Compared with the previous quarter, there was an increase of 4.9% and, in the annual comparison, the growth was 9%.

The slaughter of chickens totaled 1.43 billion head and, although it grew 3.6% compared to the previous quarter, it fell by 3.8% in the annual comparison. Paraná, with a 31.7% participation, led the national ranking, followed by Rio Grande do Sul, with 15%, and Santa Catarina, with 13%.
