Maybe one of the less known forms that rural areas are present in the Brazilian territory is in the Amazon. In the Amazon, the direct association between rural area and agricultural production is broken: part is focused on the conservation of biodiversity – the case of Environmental Conservation Areas – or of cultures – Indian and quilombola areas, for example. Even the agricultural production has its own characteristics, respecting time and water paths.

Fishers are examples of characters who comprise the Amazon rural areas.

River peoples, seringalistas, cassava producers, fishers. Most of them are small producers who live in isolation, plant for their own consumption and sell the surpluses in local markets. Boat transportation is the usual way to take children to and from school and goods to and from the city, like chlorine, which is used to treat river water for drinking.

This edition of the Retratos Magazine brings some of the characters who live from the forest areas. Read the complete text and meet mallow and jute producers in the Amazon, cacao producers in Pará and banana producers in Acre here.
