Exports grow and make the way for slaughter record of pigs and hogs in Q3

In the third quarter of 2017, 11.03 million head of pigs and hogs were slaughtered in Brazil, an increase of 3.9% over the previous quarter and 2.9% compared to the same period of 2016. This was the quarter which presented the highest result since the beginning of the time series of the Livestock Production Survey in 1997. The survey was released today by the IBGE.

According to the supervisor of IBGE’s Livestock Activity, Ângela Lordão, the increase in exports and the decrease in swine feed contributed to this result. "Fortunately, Brazil has been regaining the confidence of importing countries after the Operation Weak Flesh earlier this year. Another reason was the drop in corn price - which is the basis for swine feed -, thanks to crop production this year," she explains.

In the foreign market, Brazil exported 160,191 metric tons of pork in natura in the third quarter of 2017, 14.2% more than in the previous quarter. Revenue was at $392,393 million, an increase of 4.7% over the second half. Russia was the main importer, with a 44.4% share of the exports.

Cattle and chicken slaughter also had good results

The survey also revealed that cattle and chicken slaughter were high in both quarterly and annual comparisons. In the third quarter of 2017, 7.98 million cattle head were slaughtered, an increase of 7.6% over the previous quarter and 9.0% compared to the third quarter of 2016. In the chicken farming segment, 1.47 billion head were slaughtered, representing increases of 3.3% in relation to the previous quarter and 0.1% in comparison with the same period last year.
