With a positive change of 0.2% in October compared to September, the industrial sector was influenced mainly by the pharmaceuticals and beverages, which increased production by, respectively, 20.3% and 4.8%. The two activities are in the category of semi-durable and non-durable consumer goods, which has a 25% weight in the Monthly Survey of Industry (PIM), released today by IBGE.

According to research manager, André Macedo, it is necessary to consider the growth of pharmaceuticals as a relative phenomenon, since it has recorded oscillation: "Pharmaceutical production is among the activities that most negatively influenced the industry. Year-to-date, it fell 7.4% and in September, the drop was 19.7%."

The survey (PIM) also pointed out that the industry accumulated a production increase of 1.9% in 2017 and of 1.5% in the last 12 months. In comparison with October last year, the domestic industry grew 5.3%: the sixth consecutive increase and the highest since April 2013 (9.8%).

Although the 0.2% change was lower than the one published in the previous month (revised by 0.3%), there was a more widespread growth, with production increase in 15 of the 24 activities, while in September it had reached only eight, in comparison with the previous month. "The good thing about this result is that it helps us realize that the growth of the industry is less concentrated in specific sectors," concluded the manager.
