National retail sales presented an advance of 1.2% in June, over May 2017. According to the Monthly Survey of Trade, this is the third consecutive positive rate in this comparison. The sectors that contributed to the result were furniture and household appliances (2.2%), fabric, apparel and footwear (5.4%) and other personal and household articles – department stores, glasses, jewelry shops and others. (2.7%).

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, retail trade advanced 3% in June 2017, with positive results in all the activities surveyed. The manager of the survey, Isabella Nunes, explains the reason why the indicators are growing: “The result was due to June's festive dates. Besides, it was a month marked by the dynamics of forward sale transactions. Central Bank data showed a reduction of 12.9% in the average cost of credit to families”.

According to her, the result was a combinatin of factors. Besides the highlight to the repressed demand, in a context of slight interest rate reduction, retailers tried to stimulate promotions. Isabella believes it is a consistent growth: “The 1.1% loss registered last March was offset, however retail's overal rate is 8.4% below the record hit in November 2014”, she adds.
