The first International Prize in Statistics will be granted to British statistician Sir David Cox by the International Statistical Institute (ISI), in the opening session of the 61st World Statistics Congress. The event is scheduled for Sunday, July 16, at the Marrakech Congress Palace, in Morocco. ISI President and professor of the National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE-IBGE), Pedro Nascimento Silva, will be one of the authorities attending the award ceremony.

The prize will be awarded every two years in recognition of the use of statistics in the promotion of science, technology and human welfare. Similarly to recipients of awards such as the Nobel Prize, personalities granted with the International Prize in Statistics will receive a check, of US$ 75,000.

Sir David Cox developed, in 1972, an advanced model of analysis named after himself. The Cox Model has a number of applications, mainly in the evaluation of the survival time of patients with chronic health problems and of the risk of mortality in groups of patients of different characteristics. The model considers the influence of aspects such as air pollution, school evasion, smoking and overweight in mortality studies. The original article by Sir David Cox is among the 100 most cited articles from all scientific fields in history.

Sir David Cox, who turns 93 this Saturday, July 15, has received several other awards and paid tribute to many times. In 2010, he received the Copley Medal from the Royal Society, also granted to other renowned scientists, for example, Sir Ronald Fisher, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking.
